Christopher Nolan has established himself as a director whose name alone can guarantee packed theaters, and ‘The Odyssey’ is reinforcing that reputation more than ever. Just two weekends into its theatrical release, the film has already transformed expectations for what an R-rated historical epic can achieve.

Typically, blockbusters face a significant audience drop-off after the initial weekend excitement, with studios considering any decline under thirty percent in the second weekend a success. This makes the performance of Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic poem even more extraordinary, especially for a nearly three-hour film based on a 2,700-year-old text rather than a franchise sequel.

According to the latest weekend figures, ‘The Odyssey’ earned 90 million dollars domestically in its second weekend, marking a mere 27.1 percent decline from its opening weekend. This figure now holds the record for the smallest second weekend drop ever for any film that debuted above 100 million dollars, surpassing previous record holders ‘Wicked’ at 27.9 percent and ‘Top Gun Maverick’ at 28.9 percent.

This impressive staying power is consistent with nearly all of Nolan’s films and the broader R-rated genre. The 90 million dollar second weekend easily surpasses the director’s previous best, ‘The Dark Knight,’ which earned 75.2 million dollars in its second weekend back in 2008, and also outperformed ‘Oppenheimer’s’ 46.7 million dollar hold and ‘Inception’s’ 42.7 million dollar frame from earlier in his career.

Among R-rated films, ‘The Odyssey’ now boasts the second-best second weekend of all time, only behind ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’s’ 96.8 million dollar hold from 2024. This places Nolan’s film ahead of other genre giants like ‘American Sniper,’ ‘IT,’ and the original ‘Deadpool’ in terms of second weekend performance.

Looking at the bigger picture, ‘The Odyssey’ ranks among the twelve largest second weekends of all time across all genres and ratings, trailing only major hits like ‘The Force Awakens,’ ‘Avengers Endgame,’ and ‘Barbie.’ With a domestic total already exceeding 289 million dollars in just ten days, the film has firmly positioned itself as one of the standout box office stories of the year.

This momentum has already propelled ‘The Odyssey’ past 640 million dollars globally, with industry analysts now forecasting the film could surpass 300 million dollars domestically as early as this week, with projections of 400 million by early August and 500 million considered virtually assured. The film’s record for the smallest drop among 100 million dollar plus openers now surpasses other historically strong holdovers like ‘Top Gun Maverick’ and ‘Frozen 2.’

As ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ prepares to share IMAX and premium screens with ‘The Odyssey’ next weekend, industry observers are keenly monitoring how this competition might impact Nolan’s momentum. Even with this added pressure, current estimates suggest the film could still reach between 540 and 600 million dollars domestically, depending on its performance throughout the summer.

For a film centered on ancient mythology rather than a well-known franchise, achieving numbers typically associated with superhero sequels and animated blockbusters is a remarkable anomaly in today’s box office landscape. If ‘The Odyssey’ maintains its current pace, Nolan may not only secure his best opening but also the most enduring theatrical run of his entire career.

‘The Odyssey’ is currently showing in theaters worldwide.
