In recent years, Hollywood has been on the hunt for grand, mythology-driven spectacles that can draw audiences back to theaters for experiences beyond the typical franchise offerings. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ demonstrated earlier this year that ancient narratives still possess box office appeal when executed with the right scale and artistry.

Now, India’s film industry is making its own ambitious bid for this cinematic territory, with a project that is being hailed as one of the most expensive productions ever created outside of Hollywood. This endeavor aims to present one of the subcontinent’s most revered stories on a truly global platform.

The official trailer for ‘Ramayana‘ has just been released, offering viewers their most comprehensive glimpse yet at Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part adaptation of the ancient Hindu epic. The film is set for a worldwide theatrical debut starting November 6. It follows the journey of exiled prince Rama, portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor, and his wife Sita, played by Sai Pallavi, as they navigate exile and turmoil, culminating in Sita’s abduction by the demon king Ravana, played by Yash, which ignites an epic battle between good and evil.

The impressive figures behind ‘Ramayana’ help clarify the buzz surrounding the trailer. Both parts of the film were filmed in IMAX, with a combined budget estimated at around $500 million, making it one of the most costly films ever produced. Producer Namit Malhotra has indicated that the budget surpasses $400 million, highlighting the substantial financial commitment involved in this project.

This scale is matched by the film’s creative team. The score is crafted by Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman, while visual effects are managed by DNEG, the acclaimed VFX studio known for its work on the “Dune” films, “Interstellar,” and “Inception.” Sony Pictures is the international distributor for the project, managing all territories outside India, while Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is in charge of distribution within India.

The timing of the release is significant. Diwali celebrates Rama’s return to his kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his triumph over Ravana. The tradition of lighting lamps during the holiday symbolizes the illumination of Ayodhya on the night Rama returned home. Releasing the film during this period connects it deeply to the cultural and religious importance of the narrative.

Part 1 is anticipated to lead up to Sita’s abduction, with the rescue mission and the climactic battle reserved for Part 2, which is set to release during Diwali 2027. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, Arun Govil, Indira Krishnan, and Lara Dutta.

The comparisons being drawn to ‘Ramayana’ are unmistakable. The project is being framed as India’s response to films like “The Lord of the Rings,” “Avatar,” and “Gladiator,” with the explicit aim of achieving for Indian mythology what Nolan’s “The Odyssey” did for Greek myths earlier this year.

Kapoor, Yash, Tiwari, and Malhotra presented new footage and discussed the making of the two films at San Diego Comic-Con, emphasizing the production’s efforts to attract international audiences ahead of the release. With a budget and scale rarely seen outside of major Hollywood studios, ‘Ramayana’ now carries the responsibility of demonstrating that Indian mythological storytelling can captivate a truly global box office audience.
