The X-Men have lingered in the shadows of Marvel’s Avengers-level films for years, acting as a cinematic ghost that fans continually revisit. With mutants finally set to join the Avengers on screen, curiosity about the franchise’s past has intensified.

This excitement has been steadily building as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ rolls out its marketing campaign, teasing familiar faces from the original 2000s ‘X-Men’ films alongside the MCU’s core lineup. However, for every confirmed cast member, there are just as many questions about who might be absent.

Among the most pressing inquiries involve three of the franchise’s most cherished characters: Jean Grey, Storm, and Rogue. The actresses originally associated with these roles—Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, and Anna Paquin—have not been confirmed for the ‘Doomsday’ cast, leaving fans speculating about the fate of their characters.

Now, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have tackled this mystery head-on. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight at San Diego Comic-Con, the filmmakers addressed fan speculation regarding these characters, providing a thoughtful yet cautious explanation of their approach.

Anthony Russo recognized the significance of these characters to longtime fans, telling ET’s Denny Directo, “The history of the X-Men is really special to us.” He added, “We won’t answer specifically… All of those characters are loved and we thought a lot about their history. They feed into this movie in a very meaningful way.”

This type of response, which avoids confirming or denying specific appearances while promising narrative importance, aligns with the Russos’ marketing strategy for the film. It leaves room for surprises while acknowledging the deep emotional ties these characters have to the franchise’s legacy.

These remarks come after months of statements from the actresses themselves, many of which have painted a clearer, albeit less optimistic, picture. Halle Berry has already confirmed she will not reprise her role as Storm, telling reporters that fans should stop expecting her name in casting announcements. Famke Janssen provided a similarly grounded response regarding Jean Grey, noting that Marvel and Disney never approached her about returning to the role.

Despite these individual denials, the Russos’ comments imply that the characters themselves, independent of the original actresses, will still hold some meaningful place in the story. This distinction has sparked ongoing fan theories about recasting, multiversal variants, or entirely new interpretations of these X-Men legacies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The uncertainty only adds to the intricate mystery surrounding ‘Doomsday’s’ ensemble, which already features original ‘X-Men’ actors like Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart alongside newer MCU stars. How Jean Grey, Storm, and Rogue fit into this mix remains one of the film’s most closely guarded secrets as the release date approaches.

With the Russos hinting that more surprises could be on the horizon beyond the already announced cast, fans are left to speculate until the film’s premiere. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18.
