China has long posed challenges for Hollywood superhero films, particularly in recent times, as local viewers increasingly prefer domestic blockbusters over foreign franchises. This makes the current success of Tom Holland’s latest web-slinging adventure even more impressive.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ premiered in Chinese theaters on July 29, arriving two days before its North American release, giving local audiences the first glimpse of Peter Parker’s next chapter. Given the struggles American superhero films have faced in the region over the past few years, initial expectations for the opening were cautiously optimistic.

However, those expectations have been completely surpassed. By midday Wednesday, the film had already grossed over $16.5 million, a pace unmatched by any U.S. comic-book movie in China for at least seven years, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Local ticketing giant Maoyan now forecasts a first-day total of approximately $37.4 million, a figure that would leave recent Marvel releases far behind. The closest competitor, ‘Venom: The Last Dance,’ earned just $9.4 million on its opening day in 2024, highlighting the extraordinary performance of ‘Brand New Day.’

To illustrate this gap, the last superhero film to open at a similar level in China was ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home,’ which debuted to $36 million in 2019. Since then, Marvel films faced a lengthy regulatory freeze in the Chinese market from mid-2019 until early 2023, and recovery has been slow, with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ and ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ marking the previous high points at $87 million and $94 million, respectively, for their entire theatrical runs.

This opening is particularly significant as ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ was never released in China, reportedly due to regulatory objections regarding the Statue of Liberty’s prominent role in the film’s climax. This absence created a four-year gap for Chinese audiences to engage with Holland’s Spider-Man, making this release their first opportunity to reconnect with the character’s journey since ‘Far From Home.’

Maoyan’s full-run forecast for China now stands at around $255 million, while rival tracking firm Dengta predicts an even higher total exceeding $265 million. Either estimate would represent one of the strongest performances for any Hollywood superhero film in China in years, especially considering the decline of American blockbusters’ popularity among local moviegoers since the pandemic.

The impressive debut in China adds to an already thrilling global rollout for the film. Industry analysts currently estimate an international opening between $275 million and $300 million, with a North American debut projected around $180 million, positioning ‘Brand New Day’ to potentially rival some of the biggest worldwide launches in franchise history.

With a reported production budget of $225 million, according to Variety, the film’s simultaneous release in China appears to be yielding the results Sony and Marvel anticipated when they secured the earlier date and an exclusive IMAX rollout not available to U.S. audiences. If early tracking holds through the opening weekend, ‘Brand New Day’ could emerge as one of the biggest superhero openings China has witnessed in years.
