True crime storytelling has emerged as one of Netflix’s most dependable genres, yet few real-life cases carry the same unsettling weight as the narrative behind one of the longest manhunts in FBI history. This weight is precisely what the streamer’s latest prestige thriller is set to explore when it premieres later this year.

‘Unabomber’ delves into the origin story of Ted Kaczynski, the former Harvard math prodigy who became notorious for a nationwide bombing campaign that instilled fear across the United States for nearly two decades. Instead of primarily focusing on the extensive hunt to apprehend him, the film adopts a psychological lens, tracing how a brilliant young student spiraled into extremism.

Netflix has confirmed that the film will debut globally on September 25, featuring a lead cast that includes Russell Crowe, Jacob Tremblay, Shailene Woodley, and Annabelle Wallis. Tremblay portrays a young Kaczynski, while Crowe takes on the role of Henry Murray, the controversial Harvard psychology professor whose experiments on Kaczynski are widely believed to have influenced his later path.

Rather than presenting a straightforward narrative, ‘Unabomber’ employs two interwoven timelines that shift between Kaczynski’s formative years at Harvard and the eventual manhunt that ultimately led to his capture. Woodley plays Joanne Miller, a fictionalized FBI agent who spearheads the 1990s investigation and uses Kaczynski’s own published manifesto as the key to identifying him. Wallis completes the main cast as Christiana Morgan, Murray’s academic partner and co-director of the Harvard Psychological Clinic where the experiments occurred.

Director Janus Metz, known for ‘Borg vs. McEnroe’ and episodes of ‘Andor,’ described the project to Netflix’s own Tudum as the tale of a young man who feels increasingly alienated by society and ultimately resorts to violence as an outlet. He elaborated that the film alternates between two timelines, chronicling both the making of the Unabomber and the efforts to capture him.

Metz also shared what initially attracted him to the project, noting that while the FBI’s investigation into Kaczynski was one of the bureau’s longest and most costly operations, it was really Kaczynski’s time as a young math student at Harvard that piqued his interest as a filmmaker. This focus on Kaczynski’s psychological disintegration, rather than merely dramatizing the bombings, seems central to Metz’s approach to the material.

To prepare for the role, Tremblay reportedly studied investigative recordings of the real Kaczynski to capture his distinctive cadence and subtly arrogant confidence. This level of preparation indicates that Netflix is positioning this as a serious character study rather than a conventional true-crime thriller focused solely on suspense.

The project has been in development for over a year, initially announced under the working title ‘Unabom,’ which references the FBI’s original code name for the case combining “university” and “airline bombing.” Since then, the film has gradually expanded its cast and crew, ultimately arriving at its current title ahead of its confirmed fall release.

Given how infrequently Kaczynski’s story has been dramatized compared to its frequent coverage in documentaries, ‘Unabomber’ presents an opportunity to offer audiences a genuinely fresh perspective on a case that reshaped American views on domestic terrorism. With such a strong cast and a director focused on psychological depth over mere shock value, anticipation is already building for what could be one of Netflix’s most talked-about releases this fall.
