For years, rights entanglements between Marvel Studios and external partners have influenced which characters can appear together on screen, leaving fans to decipher the situation from various interview snippets. Recently, a comment from Marvel’s president has added a new layer to this ongoing puzzle.

Vincent D’Onofrio has been quite open about the reasons his beloved character, Wilson Fisk, or Kingpin, hasn’t made it into a Spider-Man film despite significant fan interest. During an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast last year, D’Onofrio stated that ownership issues have kept Kingpin confined to television, with no prospects for even a brief film cameo.

This narrative has largely gone unchallenged until now. In a recent episode of the same podcast, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, directly countered D’Onofrio’s claims, asserting that the rights situation isn’t as complicated as the actor has portrayed. Feige acknowledged that there are hurdles to navigate, as with any character, but emphasized that discussions have already taken place.

This marks a significant departure from D’Onofrio’s consistent statements over the past year. The actor has maintained that Kingpin remains entirely off-limits for feature films, previously telling Horowitz that using the character in a movie is quite challenging due to ownership issues, and that he is currently restricted to television projects.

D’Onofrio has expressed his frustration with this situation as recently as this year, urging Marvel and Sony to resolve the issues so Kingpin could finally confront Spider-Man on the big screen. He has characterized the arrangement as a genuinely complicated rights issue in social media exchanges with fans, reinforcing the same narrative he has consistently shared in interviews.

Feige’s remarks suggest that D’Onofrio’s narrative may not fully capture the reality of the situation behind the scenes. Given Feige’s role overseeing Marvel Studios’ entire slate, including the ongoing relationship with Sony that has allowed characters like Daredevil to transition between television and film, his more optimistic perspective holds significant weight, even without a concrete announcement.

Kingpin’s complicated status arises from the character’s connections to both Spider-Man and Daredevil, two properties that have historically involved separate rights arrangements between Marvel and Sony. This overlap is why Charlie Cox’s Daredevil was able to appear in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ while D’Onofrio’s Fisk has been limited to Disney+ series such as ‘Hawkeye,’ ‘Echo,’ and ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’

Importantly, Kingpin will not feature in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which premiered in theaters this week and continues Peter Parker’s story following the memory-erasing aftermath of ‘No Way Home.’ Whether Feige’s more positive outlook indicates that a big-screen Kingpin appearance is closer than fans anticipate remains uncertain.

For now, fans are left to navigate the conflicting accounts from two individuals who would presumably have the most accurate understanding of the situation. Whether this discrepancy will be clarified further as press for ‘Brand New Day’ and the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ continues remains to be seen, but it certainly provides the fandom with fresh material to speculate about.
