Ryan Hurst Posts New Kratos Selfie After Shocking Exit from ‘God of War’
Amazon’s live-action adaptation of ‘God of War‘ has faced intense scrutiny, with every casting announcement and set photo analyzed by a fanbase fiercely protective of the original material. Based on the acclaimed video games from 2018 and 2023, the series follows Kratos and his son Atreus on their journey across the Nine Realms, and expectations for capturing that dynamic have been exceptionally high.
Much of this focus has been on Ryan Hurst, who was cast as Kratos in January and underwent a significant physical transformation for the role. When Amazon unveiled its first official image of Hurst in costume back in February, the response was harsh, with fans likening his appearance to cosplay and inundating social media with jokes about the production.
Now, months later, Hurst has shared a new Instagram Story featuring himself as Kratos, and the timing has piqued fans’ interest for a different reason. This photo comes just days after it was revealed that Hurst is no longer part of the series, having been recast due to a serious on-set injury.
The injury occurred in late June when Hurst tore a bicep while performing a stunt, roughly four months into filming. The injury was severe enough to necessitate surgery, with recovery expected to take up to a year, a timeline that Amazon reportedly deemed would push production into 2027 and be financially unfeasible for the studio.
Deadline reported that four episodes had already been filmed with Hurst as Kratos before his injury halted production. This means all of his previously filmed material will likely need to be reshot once a new actor is cast, adding significant costs and delays to a series that has already faced numerous challenges.

Dave Bautista has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the role, with sources indicating to Variety that he is currently in discussions to become the new Kratos. Bautista’s established physicality and previous collaborations with Amazon MGM Studios make him a strong choice for a production eager to resume filming, which is expected to restart in Vancouver by mid-October.
In this context, Hurst’s decision to share a new photo of Kratos seems less like a promotional effort and more like a personal farewell. The image showcases a noticeably different look from the initially criticized reveal, featuring a fuller beard that fans have noted resembles the character’s appearance in the video games more closely than what Amazon had previously shown.
Voice actor Christopher Judge, who has voiced Kratos in the games since 2018, previously praised Hurst’s casting, describing him as a talented actor and a lifelong fan of the franchise, well-suited to portray the character in live action. This background makes Hurst’s departure even more disappointing for fans who had warmed to his casting after the initial backlash subsided.
With Bautista’s deal still in the works and reshoots looming for the completed episodes, ‘God of War’ now faces a significantly altered production landscape compared to what it began with earlier this year. Whether Hurst’s recent photo signifies unreleased footage or serves as a personal keepsake, it’s evident that the actor wanted fans to see his interpretation of the role one last time before someone else takes up the mantle.
