‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ kicked off with an exciting montage that quickly showcased various villains Peter Parker has faced since his last appearance, giving dedicated comic fans plenty to spot in just a few fleeting seconds. Among the familiar and lesser-known faces, one character stood out, fulfilling a long-held wish for Spider-Man enthusiasts.

That standout moment featured Tombstone, the formidable and nearly indestructible crime boss who has been a part of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery since his debut in Web of Spider-Man #36 in March 1988. Despite his long-standing relevance in comics, the character had never made it to live-action film, marking a significant gap in Spider-Man’s cinematic history.

Recently, new behind-the-scenes footage and images have surfaced online, showcasing Marvin Jones III fully transformed into the role of Tombstone. These visuals, shared by makeup artist Josh Weston on Instagram, provide fans with their clearest glimpse yet at how Tombstone was brought to life for the film, utilizing practical prosthetics rather than digital effects.

For Jones III, stepping into this role carries a sense of continuity, making the casting feel particularly fitting. He previously voiced Tombstone in Sony’s Oscar-winning ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ where the character served as one of Kingpin’s bodyguards, giving him a direct connection to Lonnie Lincoln before donning the physical costume.

Tombstone’s screen time in ‘Brand New Day’ consists of a single scene in the film’s opening montage, where he is seen dangling Spider-Man from the side of a building, directly recreating a classic ‘Spectacular Spider-Man’ comic cover. Although this brief appearance lasts only about twelve seconds, it has already won over many fans who have waited years to see the character in live action.

Weston, the Oscar and BAFTA-winning prosthetic artist responsible for the transformation, acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the scenes while sharing the images. He described the experience of bringing Jones III’s Tombstone to life on screen as a surreal moment. The meticulous detail in the sculpt and prosthetic work has garnered praise from fans, even as some debate whether the makeup accurately reflects the character’s signature grey-toned comic appearance.

Jones III himself appears eager for Tombstone’s story to extend beyond this brief cameo. In a comment on Weston’s post, he expressed confidence that Tombstone would return, a sentiment that quickly resonated with fans hoping for more than just a one-time appearance, as noted by ComicBookMovie.

This optimism aligns with rumors from sources like The Cosmic Circus, suggesting that Lincoln could be positioned as a recurring character throughout the Spider-Man trilogy rather than just a one-off villain. Given the significant buzz surrounding his brief appearance, it wouldn’t be surprising if Sony and Marvel chose to expand his role in future films.

As ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ continues its record-breaking run in theaters, Tombstone’s live-action debut stands out as a particularly rewarding moment for longtime comic fans.
