Colman Domingo Discusses His 2.5-Hour Prosthetic Transformation for ‘Michael’ Biopic
Colman Domingo has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most dedicated actors, often taking on roles that demand more than just memorizing lines. His latest transformation, portraying Joe Jackson in the biopic ‘Michael,’ has taken that dedication to new physical heights, and the Oscar-nominated actor is now sharing insights about the demanding process.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, ‘Michael’ chronicles the rise of the King of Pop while delving into his complex relationship with his father, played by Domingo alongside Jaafar Jackson in the titular role. Since its release in April, the film has become the second-highest-grossing biopic ever, solidifying its status as one of the year’s major cinematic events.
During an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,’ Domingo revealed the physical challenges of his performance, noting that transforming into Joe Jackson required two-and-a-half hours in the makeup chair before each shoot. This intricate process involved applying prosthetics and colored contact lenses to accurately reflect Joe Jackson’s real-life appearance.
Reacting to a character photo, Domingo shared with Fallon that the transformation represented two-and-a-half hours of prosthetics. He expressed his genuine enjoyment of the role, emphasizing its personal significance, as reported by People. His commitment extended beyond just hair and makeup; Domingo previously described how the prosthetics reshaped his facial structure and altered his posture, influencing how he moved and carried himself on set.
For Domingo, accurately portraying Joe Jackson required more than just physical resemblance. He dedicated around forty hours a week to research and preparation, immersing himself in books, archival footage, and interviews to grasp the complexities of one of music’s most intricate family legacies.

This approach reflects a broader philosophy Domingo has articulated regarding portraying real individuals on screen. He explained that his aim was never mere mimicry; instead, he sought to capture and advocate for the essence of the person he was portraying, rather than just replicating surface-level traits.
However, this commitment came with its challenges during production. Domingo later shared with The Hollywood Reporter that the shoot was not easy, acknowledging the emotional weight of embodying such a polarizing figure while remaining in character around the younger actors portraying members of the Jackson family.
The physical transformation reportedly left a lasting impression on his colleagues. Jaafar Jackson, who plays his own uncle in the film, noted that there were moments during filming when Domingo’s transformation felt so complete that it was as if he were standing in front of his actual grandfather.
Domingo’s dedication to the role was evident in how he approached the daily makeup process, treating it as a ritual to fully immerse himself in the character before stepping onto set. Even as the makeup sessions became more efficient over time, the transformation consistently demanded significant time and precision to achieve convincingly.
With ‘Michael’ continuing to achieve box office milestones months after its release, Domingo’s transformation into Joe Jackson remains one of the film’s most discussed aspects, celebrated for both its technical accomplishment and the emotional depth he infused into the role.
