‘The Odyssey’ Surpasses $700 Million as Christopher Nolan’s Box Office Success Continues
Christopher Nolan’s latest film has achieved remarkable box office milestones, and the latest one is particularly impressive. Just shy of two weeks into its theatrical release, Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s ancient poem has crossed into a rarefied realm that few adult-driven dramas ever reach.
‘The Odyssey‘ debuted to tremendous acclaim, marking Nolan’s largest global launch to date and quickly becoming one of the year’s standout box office narratives. Following its release, the film has maintained an unusually strong performance, continuing to fill theaters well beyond its opening weekend—a rarity for a nearly three-hour, R-rated literary adaptation.
As reported by Variety, this momentum has propelled ‘The Odyssey’ past $700 million worldwide, making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year after just 12 days in theaters. The film has earned $320.5 million domestically and $407.4 million internationally, bringing its total to an impressive $727.9 million.
This places ‘The Odyssey’ just behind the top three earners of 2026: ‘Toy Story 5’ at $1.02 billion, ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ at $1.001 billion, and ‘Michael’ at $1.001 billion. Given its current trajectory, the film is expected to join the billion-dollar club soon, a remarkable achievement for a three-hour adaptation of a 3,000-year-old epic poem.
Adding to the film’s impressive numbers is the fact that ‘The Odyssey’ has yet to open in China, the world’s second-largest movie market. The country is reportedly preparing for a significant release, with plans for nearly 800 IMAX screens and thousands of standard theaters, indicating that there is still considerable global revenue potential.
A significant factor in the film’s success is the high demand for its IMAX presentation, as ‘The Odyssey’ is the first feature ever filmed entirely with IMAX cameras. This format alone has generated $140 million globally, making it the second-fastest title in IMAX history to surpass the $100 million mark, only behind 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
Domestically, ‘The Odyssey’ is also nearing a significant milestone, with reports indicating it is on track to surpass ‘Oppenheimer’s’ total domestic run of $330.1 million in just 13 days. This would make it Nolan’s third-highest-grossing film in the United States, trailing only his two ‘Dark Knight’ films.

This week, the film’s staying power will be tested with the release of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which is projected to achieve one of the largest openings in box office history. Despite this competition, industry analysts still anticipate that ‘The Odyssey’ will earn between $50 million and $60 million in its third weekend, a figure that would be considered strong for most adult dramas.
With a reported production budget of $250 million, making it Nolan’s most expensive film to date, ‘The Odyssey’ is on track to become his most commercially successful movie as well. It is expected to eventually surpass both ‘The Dark Knight’ at $1.008 billion and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ at $1.08 billion, claiming the title of the director’s highest-grossing film ever.
With China still ahead and domestic legs showing no signs of slowing, ‘The Odyssey’ appears set to continue its ascent in the box office rankings for weeks to come.
