Marvel villain reveals have become a captivating aspect of film marketing, often emerging through blurry set images and fleeting glimpses in trailers long before the official promotions begin. This gradual release of information has characterized the anticipation surrounding Tom Holland’s upcoming Spider-Man film, with one of its lesser-known adversaries now coming into sharper focus.

For months, rumors have circulated that actor Billy Clements would portray Ramrod, a lesser-known Marvel villain who first appeared in the comics as an adversary of Daredevil before eventually crossing paths with Spider-Man.

Fans caught their first brief look at the character back in June, when a short TV spot featured a metallic-armed figure charging at Spider-Man, echoing the cover of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ number 221, the 1981 issue titled “The Rage of Ramrod.”

The earlier footage provided only a fleeting glimpse of Ramrod’s design, leaving much to the imagination. However, a new set photo has emerged, offering a more detailed view of the character, showcasing a heavily armored physique that aligns with the comic version’s cybernetic construction worker origins, featuring metallic shoulder plating and forearm guards against a more exposed torso.

In his caption, Clements noted that much of Ramrod’s material was cut due to the film’s shortened runtime, but he expressed gratitude for being part of the project. He also mentioned training for two hours daily to accurately portray Ramrod and thanked Eddie Hall, Marvel Studios, Ryan Reynolds, and everyone involved for the opportunity.

The design embraces a rugged, industrial look that fits seamlessly with Ramrod’s comic book backstory as a former construction crew boss transformed into a powerful cyborg enforcer following a workplace accident. In the comics, this transformation granted him enhanced strength, speed, and durability, without the need for elaborate schemes, as Ramrod has always been a straightforward, smash-first type of villain.

Given the brevity of his earlier trailer appearance, many speculated that Ramrod would serve merely as a quick obstacle in a larger action sequence rather than a significant standalone threat.

This theory aligns with expectations that Ramrod will appear in a fast-paced opening montage, showcasing how Spider-Man has spent the four years since ‘No Way Home’ protecting New York solo. Reports suggest that this sequence will also feature brief nods to other lesser-known villains like Boomerang and Tarantula, each staged as visual homages to their own classic comic book covers.

This pattern reflects director Destin Daniel Cretton’s broader approach to villain reveals in the film, favoring quick, comic-accurate visual callbacks over lengthy explanations for its more obscure antagonists. Recreating specific iconic cover art for characters like Ramrod provides longtime readers with a fun nod, even if casual viewers may not recognize the reference.

As ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ continues to generate excitement with each new piece of footage released, this latest look at Ramrod adds another intriguing detail for fans following the film’s expanding rogues’ gallery. Whether the character will play a more significant role than his brief trailer appearance suggested remains to be seen once the film is fully available to audiences everywhere.
