Marvel has been quietly laying the groundwork for one of its most ambitious crossover years, with only a few theatrical releases connecting the franchise chapters. This scarcity has made each casting announcement feel more significant, and the latest confirmation is no exception.

Florence Pugh has emerged as one of the MCU’s standout stars since her debut as Yelena Belova in 2021’s ‘Black Widow.’ Her popularity has only increased following her role in last year’s ‘Thunderbolts.’ Fans have speculated for months about where her character might appear next, especially with only two Marvel Studios films set for release this year.

Now, Pugh’s participation in both films has been confirmed, making her one of the few actors slated to appear in multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe releases in 2026. She will reprise her role as Yelena in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ alongside a previously confirmed role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ later this year.

The announcement came from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, who addressed the rumors while appearing at BiliBili World in Shanghai. Feige teased that Yelena would have a significant role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ but added that fans wouldn’t have to wait long to see her again, hinting at an appearance “a little bit sooner” in an upcoming film. According to Just Jared, Feige stated, “Yelena plays a big part in that,” referring to her expanded role in December’s ‘Doomsday.’

With ‘Brand New Day’ being the only Marvel Studios theatrical release before ‘Doomsday,’ fans quickly made connections, and director Destin Daniel Cretton has confirmed Pugh’s appearance in the Spider-Man sequel. The exact size of her role remains undisclosed, but online rumors have already sparked excitement regarding a comedic bathhouse scene featuring Yelena and Peter Parker.

Pugh’s Yelena already has strong connections to the broader MCU, having taken on the Black Widow mantle in spirit following Natasha Romanoff’s sacrifice in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Her chemistry-driven portrayal, developed through appearances in ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘Thunderbolts,’ has made her a beloved addition to Marvel’s lineup, heightening anticipation for her crossover into Peter Parker’s universe.

Her role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ places her among a star-studded ensemble that includes returning X-Men actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, and Alan Cumming, solidifying the film’s status as one of the MCU’s largest crossover events since ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ With such a vast ensemble already confirmed, Pugh’s presence in ‘Brand New Day’ feels like a strategic bridge linking Spider-Man’s world to the larger Avengers narrative building toward December.

Additionally, Pugh’s busy schedule extends beyond Marvel, as she is also set to appear in ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which releases on the same day as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on December 18. This overlap positions her as one of the most sought-after actresses working across two of the year’s biggest franchise films simultaneously.

For a character who began as a scene-stealing supporting role, Yelena’s expanding presence across Marvel’s 2026 slate reflects the studio’s confidence in Pugh’s ability to anchor significant moments. Whether her cameo in ‘Brand New Day’ turns out to be a brief surprise or something more substantial, it’s evident that Marvel views her as central to the franchise’s future direction.
