Superhero fatigue has been a widely discussed topic in European markets over the past few years, with several recent Marvel films failing to reach the box office heights seen before the pandemic. However, this narrative is being challenged as Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man film begins its rollout across the continent.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ launched its European release on Wednesday, entering major markets such as Italy, the United Kingdom, and Spain ahead of its North American premiere. Initial results indicate that the film is significantly exceeding expectations, even in regions where screenings commenced later in the day.

In Italy, the film earned an impressive 4.6 million dollars and attracted 517,000 admissions on its opening Wednesday, setting a new post-Covid record for Hollywood films in the country. This total surpasses previous MCU records like ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ both at 3.5 million dollars, and ‘No Way Home’s’ 3.3 million dollar debut, making it the second-largest opening day of all time, only behind ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ 5.8 million dollars, despite screenings starting after 5 p.m.

The United Kingdom reported similarly impressive figures. According to tracking data, ‘Brand New Day’ achieved a remarkable 7.8 million dollars on Wednesday, marking the largest opening day of 2026 at the British box office. This figure surpassed ‘The Odyssey’s’ 5.8 million dollar debut, ‘Toy Story 5’s’ 5.5 million dollars, and ‘Project Hail Mary’s’ 5.2 million dollar opening, all while UK screenings began at 5:30 p.m., effectively giving the film only half a normal opening day compared to its competitors.

This UK total ranks as the fifth-largest opening day in the post-Covid era, following ‘No Way Home’s’ 10.1 million dollars, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’s’ 10 million dollars, ‘Wicked: For Good’s’ 8.6 million dollars, and ‘Barbie’s’ 8.4 million dollars, while comfortably outpacing ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ ‘No Time to Die,’ and ‘The Batman.’ Given the shortened session window, projections now suggest a strong five-day opening of 40 million to 50 million dollars for the UK alone.

Spain also contributed to the wave of positive early results, with the film reportedly exceeding 3.2 million euros on its first day of screenings, marking the best opening in the country’s box office history according to local tracking service Rentrak Spain. Together with the figures from Italy and the UK, it is evident that European audiences are viewing this release as more than just another Marvel sequel.

What makes these numbers particularly significant is the broader context of Marvel’s recent performance internationally. Several of the studio’s post-Endgame releases, including ‘The Marvels,’ ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ and even the well-received ‘Thunderbolts,’ struggled to reach even seven figures in comparable single-day metrics in some of these same markets, making ‘Brand New Day’s’ opening feel like a true outlier rather than the norm.

As the film’s rollout continues into more territories and North American previews are just beginning, these early European numbers suggest that ‘Brand New Day’ could be on track for one of the largest global openings the industry has witnessed in years. If this momentum continues throughout the rest of the international release, Sony and Marvel may be poised for a genuine box office phenomenon.
