The ‘Wizards of Waverly Place‘ universe has stirred both nostalgia and disappointment among longtime fans, particularly as the beloved Disney Channel series has transitioned into its spinoff phase. When Disney Channel announced ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,’ viewers eagerly anticipated a reunion of the original cast, especially the three Russo siblings who were the heart of the sitcom from 2007 to 2012.

However, the response has been mixed, with several original cast members openly discussing their absence from the spinoff’s storyline.

The disparity between fan expectations and the actual content has been notable, as the series has taken a different creative route than many had hoped. While some original cast members made brief appearances, others found themselves completely excluded from the project.

The four-part series finale aired on August 4, 2026, marking the conclusion of ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,’ and in the aftermath, those who were left out have had time to reflect on their roles in its absence.

Jake T. Austin, who portrayed the youngest Russo sibling Max throughout all four seasons of the original series, took to Instagram on August 6 to share his thoughts on not being part of the spinoff.

Austin revealed that he had shown genuine interest in returning when the opportunity first arose. “I was asked back in 2020 if I was interested in reprising my role and said that I was 100% in,” Austin shared in his Instagram story. “Unfortunately, the powers that be decided to take the show in a different direction and my character wasn’t part of the equation.”

Despite his disappointment, Austin expressed that he holds no resentment towards his former castmates or the show itself. “Even though I wasn’t involved, I still have nothing but love for my former castmates and wish them continued success,” he added. “Thank you to all the fans who watched over the years. The show wouldn’t be what it is without your endless support.” His statement reflects a performer who remains dedicated to the franchise but was ultimately left out of its continuation.

Austin wasn’t the only original cast member to voice concerns about the spinoff’s creative direction. According to The Wrap, David DeLuise, who played the Russo parents’ father Jerry, appeared in only a few episodes and remarked on the missed opportunity. “It would not be over if the OG wizards were really there. Missed opportunity,” DeLuise commented on Instagram in response to the finale. The show did manage to bring back Selena Gomez, Jennifer Stone, and Gregg Sulkin for the finale, albeit in limited roles.

The 31-year-old actor, who had previously engaged with promotional materials for the spinoff and expressed excitement about reuniting with his co-stars, never made a cameo or guest appearance during the show’s entire run. His complete absence stands in stark contrast to some other original cast members who at least had moments in the finale. The spinoff was led by David Henrie and Selena Gomez, both serving as executive producers alongside the creative team.
