DC Studios has quietly scrapped another project from its original DC Universe lineup. This time, it’s the anticipated ‘Booster Gold’ TV series for HBO, which has officially ceased development, as confirmed by the show’s writer, David Jenkins.

Jenkins shared this news on Threads, stating that his version of the series is no longer in the works. His post was brief but left little room for interpretation. “My ‘Booster Gold’ won’t be moving forward. Can’t improve on Mahershala’s lovely statement so I’ll just apply it here as well.”

The comment referenced Mahershala Ali’s recent interview with GQ, where the actor revealed he had accepted that Marvel’s long-delayed ‘Blade’ reboot was no longer happening with him attached. Ali explained, “For whatever reason, that project is not for me. If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on. Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. I feel ready to move on from the ‘Blade’ questions. Those questions are for them. They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question.”

By sharing that quote, Jenkins seemed to draw a parallel between the fate of ‘Booster Gold’ and Marvel’s stalled ‘Blade’ project, implying that the series never reached the stage where production could commence.

‘Booster Gold’ was first announced in 2023 when DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled the initial chapter of their new DC Universe. The lineup included projects like ‘Superman,’ ‘Supergirl,’ ‘Creature Commandos,’ ‘Lanterns,’ ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ ‘Swamp Thing,’ ‘Paradise Lost,’ and the ‘Booster Gold’ series.

Some of these projects have already progressed. ‘Superman’ and ‘Supergirl’ have hit theaters, while ‘Creature Commandos’ was released in 2024. ‘Lanterns’ is set to premiere next month, and several other announced projects are at various stages of development.

However, ‘Booster Gold’ is not the first project to vanish from the original slate. Earlier this year, James Gunn confirmed that ‘The Authority’ was no longer in development. At that time, Gunn stated that ‘Booster Gold’ was still moving forward, while ‘Paradise Lost’ remained in what he described as “extreme development.”

Jenkins joined the project in July 2025 after being hired to write the pilot and serve as showrunner if HBO greenlit the series. He is best known as the creator of HBO’s comedy series ‘Our Flag Means Death,’ making him a fitting choice to bring Booster Gold’s blend of humor and superhero action to the screen.

The character has long been a fan favorite in DC Comics. Booster Gold is a time traveler from the future who returns to the present and uses advanced technology to become a celebrated superhero. Known for his confidence, love of attention, and comedic flair, he often teams up with Blue Beetle and travels with his robotic companion Skeets. Although Booster Gold has appeared in several animated DC projects, he has yet to lead a live-action series.

DC Studios has not officially commented on Jenkins’ announcement. Variety reported that the studio did not respond to its request for comment.

For now, the future of Booster Gold in James Gunn’s DC Universe remains uncertain. While the character could still make an appearance in another project down the line, the standalone HBO series announced as part of the DCU’s original slate seems to have reached its conclusion before production even began.
