‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Aims for Box Office Record That ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Couldn’t Fully Protect
Summer box office weekends often lack the historical significance they once had, as franchise fatigue and streaming competition diminish the communal theater-going experience Hollywood once cherished. However, every now and then, a release emerges that captures the industry’s full attention.
This weekend, Tom Holland’s latest portrayal of Peter Parker is generating just that kind of buzz. With record previews and an opening day that is already rewriting box office history, industry analysts are re-evaluating just how monumental this moment could be.
The film is now targeting a record that previously seemed unassailable: the pure Friday opening-day record. When ‘Avengers: Endgame’ premiered in 2019, the industry cleared the way for it, with nearly three weeks of no major releases and several films removed from over 3,000 screens to make space. This strategic move allowed ‘Endgame’ to become the only film to surpass $97.5 million on a pure Friday, as well as the only opening weekend to exceed $300 million.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is challenging this dominance without the same level of promotional support. The film has already amassed a staggering $167 million to $173 million on its first day, including previews, easily eclipsing ‘Endgame’s’ previous first-day record of $157.4 million. The three-day domestic estimate is projected to exceed $330 million from 4,487 theaters, positioning it as the second-largest domestic opening ever, trailing only ‘Endgame’s’ $357.1 million.
This achievement is even more impressive considering the context. ‘Endgame’ benefited from a nearly empty release calendar and full access to all premium formats, including IMAX, PLF, and 3D, with no competition splitting ticket sales. In contrast, ‘Brand New Day’ has limited access to premium large format screens, sharing IMAX and PLF space with ‘The Odyssey,’ while also competing against several other films still showing on over 3,000 screens combined.
The overall North American box office figures highlight the significance of this weekend. Current estimates indicate that the entire domestic box office could reach between $407 million and $412 million, surpassing the $402 million generated by all films combined during ‘Endgame’s’ original opening weekend in 2019.
Records are also being shattered across specific formats. 4DX is on track for a $4.5 million opening weekend record after achieving all-time high previews of $1.3 million, surpassing the previous record set by ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.’ ScreenX, the format for which ‘Brand New Day’ was specifically shot, is projected to achieve a record $4 million weekend after exceeding ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ previous preview night record.

Sony’s internal projections were notably conservative leading up to the release, estimating a domestic opening closer to $195 million. Given the film’s actual performance since its release, that estimate now seems significantly low, with some industry trackers suggesting the final domestic total could come close to ‘Endgame’s’ all-time high.
Whether ‘Brand New Day’ ultimately surpasses ‘Endgame’ at the top of the chart or falls just short, the fact that it is mounting a serious challenge—without the clear runway ‘Endgame’ had—marks a genuinely rare moment for the industry. This weekend is likely to be remembered not just for a single blockbuster but for a theatrical marketplace that is firing on all cylinders once again.
