Vin Diesel Announces ‘Fast Forever’ Script Completion: Best Script in Decades
Franchise finales come with immense pressure, as everything built over the years needs to resonate perfectly, or risk tarnishing the legacy. Few franchises feel this weight quite like the ‘Fast & Furious’ series, which has spent 25 years evolving from street racing to global espionage without finding a clean way to conclude its story.
The quest for closure has taken longer than fans anticipated. Following the cliffhanger ending of ‘Fast X’ in 2023, which featured post-credit teases for the returns of Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson, the franchise has been quietly working towards its planned conclusion, with the path to an actual release date proving more complicated than expected.
That wait has finally yielded some exciting news. Vin Diesel took to Instagram to announce that the script for ‘Fast Forever’ is complete. He praised the screenplay by Michael Lesslie, calling it the best script he has read in decades, and mentioned he was “still crying” after finishing it.
This comment aligns with Diesel’s promotional strategy for this sequel. He has positioned ‘Fast Forever’ as the ultimate grand finale of the main series, using social media as the primary platform to keep fans updated on the film’s progress.
Diesel also hinted at a direct connection to the franchise’s origins, stating that fans “will thank God” they saw the original 2001 film in theaters this summer, coinciding with the 25th anniversary re-release of ‘The Fast and the Furious’ on August 21. This suggests Diesel views ‘Fast Forever’ as a return to the series’ roots.
Lesslie’s involvement holds significance due to his impressive track record. The screenwriter, known for ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ and ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’, was brought in to revise an earlier draft by Aaron Rabin and Zach Dean. Diesel has previously described their collaboration as revitalizing a story with genuine emotion.
Despite the excitement surrounding the script’s completion, the production timeline remains unclear. Diesel had previously claimed to be “on set” in July, but later reports clarified that filming had not yet started, leaving some ambiguity about the project’s current status even with a finished screenplay.
The finale will be directed by Louis Leterrier, who also directed ‘Fast X’, and is currently slated for release on March 17, 2028. Diesel has teased some intriguing details about the film, including a role for soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo and the potential return of Paul Walker’s character, Brian O’Conner, more than a decade after Walker’s passing in 2013.
With the script now complete and Diesel’s enthusiasm at an all-time high, fans finally have something tangible to look forward to after years of sporadic updates. Whether the film lives up to Diesel’s emotional endorsement remains to be seen, but the conclusion of Dom Toretto’s saga is beginning to take shape.
