Christopher Nolan has made a name for himself by transforming ambitious, complex concepts into box office successes, and his latest film, ‘The Odyssey’, is no exception. This three-hour, R-rated adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic has defied expectations, proving skeptics wrong week after week.

The film debuted with the largest global opening of Nolan’s career and has continued to gain momentum rather than diminishing like most blockbusters do after their initial weekend. Even with a new Marvel film competing for screens, ‘The Odyssey’ has managed to maintain its upward trajectory.

Currently, ‘The Odyssey’ has surpassed $911 million globally and is projected to reach an impressive $1.4 billion by the conclusion of its theatrical run.

Such a trajectory is remarkable for any film, especially one with an R rating and a nearly three-hour runtime based on a 2,700-year-old poem. It has become the fourth film released in 2026 to cross the $900 million mark, joining the ranks of ‘Toy Story 5’, ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, and ‘Michael’.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is the speed at which it occurred. Before its third weekend, ‘The Odyssey’ had already earned around $700 million worldwide, adding approximately $200 million in just a few days, despite ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ taking a significant portion of its theater availability.

This resilience has led to increasingly optimistic forecasts regarding ‘The Odyssey’s’ final earnings. According to The Hollywood Handle, the film is now expected to gross between $1.4 billion and $1.5 billion globally by the end of its run, potentially surpassing ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ to become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.

The current record is held by ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, which concluded its run with $1.338 billion worldwide after a record-setting $205 million domestic opening for an R-rated film. For ‘The Odyssey’ to exceed that figure would represent a remarkable achievement for a film centered on classical mythology rather than a superhero franchise.

Much of this sustained success can be attributed to strong word of mouth and critical acclaim, with the film boasting a 94 percent Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Premium formats have also significantly contributed to its box office success, with Imax screenings accounting for a considerable portion of its earnings both domestically and internationally.

‘The Odyssey’ still has plenty of time left in its release schedule, including an upcoming debut in China, which could further enhance its already historic total. If the film’s international performance continues to mirror that of Nolan’s recent releases, this additional boost could bring its final earnings closer to the upper end of current projections.

Whether ‘The Odyssey’ ultimately claims the title of highest-grossing R-rated film or simply solidifies itself as one of Nolan’s greatest commercial successes, its journey has already transformed perceptions of what is achievable for a serious, mid-budget epic in today’s theatrical landscape.
