Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman Return for ‘Practical Magic 2’ Press Photos

Some movies take years to find their audience, and ‘Practical Magic’ is a prime example. When it debuted in 1998, the witchy fantasy comedy featuring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman faced a tough reception, struggling both critically and at the box office during its initial release.

However, the film’s legacy transformed over the decades, evolving into a cherished cult classic. Fans now eagerly rewatch ‘Practical Magic’ every autumn, quoting its memorable lines and celebrating its themes of sisterhood, magic, and midnight margaritas.

Now, nearly three decades later, Bullock and Kidman are returning to that enchanting world. Recent press photos from Film Updates offer fans a delightful glimpse of the duo together, just ahead of the highly anticipated release of ‘Practical Magic 2.’

In the sequel, Bullock and Kidman reprise their roles as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, part of a multi-generational family of witches burdened by a curse of lovelessness. They must confront old secrets and make sacrifices to break the spell. Directed by Susanne Bier, the screenplay is penned by Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original film, with the story drawing from a later installment in Alice Hoffman’s ‘Practical Magic’ book series.

The cast also welcomes back franchise favorites Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, reprising their roles as the quirky aunts Jet and Franny. New faces in the ensemble include Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod.

Bullock and Kidman are producing the sequel alongside Denise Di Novi, who also worked on the original film, ensuring a strong creative connection remains intact as new talents join the project. Both stars have expressed their deep appreciation for the first film, despite its initial struggles.

In a 2024 oral history with Rolling Stone, Bullock reflected on the studio’s commitment to the project, even amidst criticism, expressing gratitude for the film’s existence. Kidman shared similar feelings, emphasizing her enduring love for the film.

‘Practical Magic 2’ is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11, moving up from its original September 18 date, perfectly aligning with the fall season’s spooky vibe. This timing seems intentional, tapping into the cozy-witch energy that made the original a beloved October staple for many fans.

With the goodwill ‘Practical Magic’ has garnered over the years, the sequel faces a unique kind of pressure. Instead of introducing something new, ‘Practical Magic 2’ must meet the high expectations of nostalgia and fan loyalty while expanding the Owens family story in a meaningful way.

Given the evident chemistry between Bullock and Kidman in these latest photos, along with a supporting cast filled with both beloved returning characters and exciting newcomers, the sequel is poised for a successful fall release.
