This year’s box office has already seen more billion-dollar blockbusters than Hollywood has experienced since the pandemic transformed the theatrical landscape. This momentum has made 2026 feel like a true revival for movie theaters, with hit after hit quietly accumulating record-breaking numbers throughout the summer.

Even amidst this backdrop of consistent success, the industry was unprepared for the impact of Tom Holland’s latest portrayal of the web-slinger. What began as a strong opening weekend has quickly escalated into a phenomenon that is redefining the box office hierarchy for the year.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has officially become the highest-grossing film of 2026 globally, surpassing every other release this year in just a few days. The film debuted with a staggering $927 million globally, marking the second-largest worldwide debut in history, only behind ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and crossed the $1 billion threshold within just six days of its release, making it the second-fastest film to achieve that milestone.

This explosive trajectory allowed ‘Brand New Day’ to swiftly overtake two of the year’s previous box office leaders. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which also stars Holland, had been performing well with a global total exceeding $911 million after three weekends in theaters. This impressive figure contributed to Universal surpassing $4 billion at the worldwide box office for the year. However, ‘Brand New Day’s’ rapid ascent to $1 billion outpaced that steadier climb.

The film also surpassed ‘Michael,’ the biopic from Lionsgate and Universal that had been a top earner for months with a worldwide total exceeding $1 billion. Alongside ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ and ‘Toy Story 5,’ ‘Michael’ had been instrumental in what was shaping up to be one of the strongest box office years since 2019, until ‘Brand New Day’ arrived and reshuffled the leaderboard almost overnight.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that ‘Brand New Day’ accomplished this feat without any IMAX screens domestically, as that premium format had already been reserved for ‘The Odyssey’s’ exclusive three-week window. Despite this limitation, the film shattered records across nearly every other premium format, achieving the biggest global opening ever for ScreenX and 4DX combined, as well as the highest-grossing Dolby Cinema opening weekend in history.

Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, who heads marketplace trends at Rentrak, contextualized this achievement within an already historic year for theaters. He pointed out that with ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ ‘Michael,’ and ‘Toy Story 5’ each crossing the billion-dollar mark, this summer alone is on track to help 2026 become the highest-grossing year at the box office since 2019.

With China’s strong opening performance already sparking speculation that ‘Brand New Day’ could eventually surpass $2 billion worldwide, a milestone only seven films in history have reached, the film’s hold on the top of this year’s box office charts shows no signs of weakening. For a franchise many believed had peaked with ‘No Way Home,’ this latest installment has demonstrated that there is still plenty of room for growth.
