Netflix Expands Theatrical Release for Cannes Winner ‘La Bola Negra’ — What to Know
Netflix has always had a complex relationship with traditional movie theaters, often treating theatrical runs as mere formalities rather than serious box office endeavors. However, this approach is gradually changing as the streaming giant seeks greater prestige and recognition during awards season.
This shift is exemplified by one of this year’s standout festival films, which captivated audiences at Cannes and has emerged as a significant contender for major awards. According to Variety, Netflix has announced its longest theatrical window to date for this Oscar hopeful, adjusting the film’s release date as part of a broader rollout strategy.
The film in question is ‘La Bola Negra,’ a Spanish queer epic directed by the duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, collectively known as Los Javis. It is set to premiere in U.S. theaters on November 6, followed by its Netflix debut on December 4, after a 28-day theatrical run. This commitment marks a significant investment in the big screen for a film that Netflix clearly views as a major Oscar contender.
‘La Bola Negra’ comes with impressive festival credentials, having tied for the Best Director award at the 79th Cannes Film Festival and receiving a nomination for the prestigious Palme d’Or. The film reportedly garnered a standing ovation lasting between 16 and 20 minutes during its world premiere. Netflix secured U.S. distribution rights after a competitive bidding process, reportedly paying between $4 million and $5 million.
Described as a bold and passionate narrative spanning nearly a century of Spanish history from the 1930s to the present, the film follows three men whose lives are intricately linked through themes of desire, pain, and inheritance. Drawing inspiration from an unfinished work by Spanish poet Federico García Lorca and Alberto Conejero’s play “La piedra oscura,” the story delves into memory, love, queer identity, and legacy across generations.
The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Spanish musician Guitarricadelafuente in his acting debut, along with ‘Elite’ star Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, and Milo Quifes. Supporting roles include Goya winner Lola Dueñas and Peabody winner Julio Torres, with Oscar winner Penélope Cruz and three-time Golden Globe winner Glenn Close rounding out the cast.
Calvo and Ambrossi co-wrote the screenplay with Conejero and produced the film alongside Jorge Pezzi. In a joint statement, the directors expressed the project’s importance, stating, “When we began writing ‘La Bola Negra,’ we aimed to tell a story about freedom, legacy, and the significance of LGBTQ+ visibility. Most importantly, we wanted to honor the generations whose courage and sacrifices have made our freedoms possible today.”

This film marks Calvo and Ambrossi’s first feature since 2017’s ‘Holy Camp!’ and follows their acclaimed Movistar Plus+ series ‘La Mesías,’ which premiered at San Sebastian and screened at Sundance. It is also set for international theatrical releases, including Spain on September 25 and France on December 16, positioning it as a true global contender for awards rather than just a streaming release.
The expanded theatrical strategy places ‘La Bola Negra’ alongside David Fincher’s ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’ as one of Netflix’s key bets for this awards season, highlighting the streamer’s increasing commitment to providing its most prestigious titles with substantial big-screen exposure before their Netflix premieres.
