Disney’s Wizards Beyond Waverly Place concluded its final season with a surprising twist that significantly impacted one of the franchise’s key relationships. In a rare move for Disney Channel shows, the series revealed that Mason Greyback, Alex Russo’s long-time love interest, had already died prior to the events of the sequel series.

This shocking revelation unfolded during the final episodes of the show’s third and last season. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the narrative initially sets the stage for a joyful reunion between Alex Russo, portrayed by Selena Gomez, and Mason, played by Gregg Sulkin. Alex believes Mason has returned to propose, but the emotional moment quickly takes an unexpected turn.

When Mason shows up at Alex’s door, she is thrilled, assuming he is there to ask for her hand in marriage. However, Mason reveals that something is amiss and that their reunion is not unfolding as she believes.

“I can’t propose to you. And you know why. Think about it. This isn’t how it’s supposed to be. Why can’t I propose to you?” Mason questions. Alex gradually comes to the realization, responding, “Because you’re dead.”

This revelation leaves Alex in a state of confusion as she starts to question her circumstances. Mason explains that when she entered a magical portal, she ended up in a limbo between life and death. He tells her he has returned to assist her in reclaiming the life she is meant to lead.

“When you went through the rift, you ended up somewhere in between. And I came here to help you get back,” Mason elaborates. “You have a whole other life, Alex. You got married. You have a beautiful daughter. And she needs you. That’s the life that you’re meant to live. You have to go back.”

The poignant farewell between the two characters provides fans with closure regarding their relationship. Alex expresses her gratitude to Mason for returning to help her, and he leaves her with a heartfelt message. “I’ll always love you, Alex Russo. And I’ll always be watching over you,” Mason tells her.

The choice to kill off Mason is particularly surprising, as Disney Channel shows typically shy away from permanently removing major legacy characters. Mason, introduced during the original Wizards of Waverly Place series, became one of Alex’s most beloved relationships, making this reveal a significant moment for dedicated fans.

The final season also continued to explore the storyline involving Billie, played by Janice LeAnn Brown, who was revealed to be Alex’s daughter. Her existence had been concealed through magic to protect her from Lord Morsus, a formidable enemy tied to her family.

As noted by Entertainment Weekly, the finale ultimately wraps up the Russo family saga. Alex and Justin reunite, Billie discovers her father, and the family confronts Morsus together. While Alex’s fate seems uncertain during the confrontation, the show later confirms her survival and the family’s reunion.

The ending offers the franchise an emotional send-off while also taking a bold risk by altering the status of a cherished character. Mason’s death stands as one of the darkest and most unforeseen moments in Wizards history, demonstrating that even a magical family comedy can deliver a profound emotional twist.
