Sadie Sink’s Role in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Kept Secret with Fake Name
The casting mystery surrounding Sadie Sink’s role in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has stirred considerable buzz among Marvel fans. Since the ‘Stranger Things’ star joined the project, speculation has been rampant as fans and insiders attempted to uncover the character details the studio was keeping under wraps.
Sink was cast in 2025 without any official word on her character, and this secrecy persisted throughout the film’s marketing campaign. Even during the press tour, she maintained her silence, humorously acknowledging the mystery in videos shared on the film’s official social media accounts.
The production took extensive measures to guard this reveal, even embedding a codename in the script. According to a spoiler discussion Jacob Batalon had with The Hollywood Reporter, Jean Grey was referred to as “Denim Red,” a name that humorously highlights her iconic red hair.
This detail serves as a fitting punchline to what many considered one of the worst-kept secrets in modern blockbuster filmmaking. Marvel fans who recalled rumors about Sink portraying Jean Grey had already pieced together the clues, especially as trailers hinted at a superhuman character capable of possessing others or freezing crowds in New York.
The codename was just one of several tactics used to keep the character’s identity under wraps. During promotional events, interviewers tried to elicit a response from Sink. At one U.S. junket, an interviewer posed a hypothetical about buying grey jeans, to which Sink cleverly responded with curiosity about his question, effectively dodging the inquiry while admitting it was exciting to see all the theories.

Ultimately, the film confirmed Sink’s identity. Her character remains a mystery at the start of ‘Brand New Day,’ with her face only revealed about halfway through. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man investigates a new villain in New York City who can possess bystanders within a 33-foot radius.
This teenage telepath uses unsuspecting individuals to attack Department of Damage Control facilities, prompting Peter Parker to collaborate with police and DODC director Bill Metzger, portrayed by Tramell Tillman. After Jean is captured, Peter uncovers Metzger’s deception, revealing him as the true antagonist.
Jean and her sister Sara, played by Olivia Booth-Ford, were abandoned by their mother after their powers emerged, and the sisters remained united until the DODC kidnapped Sara. This backstory adds depth to Jean’s character, giving her a sympathetic foundation rather than a typical villain arc.
Sink is now the third actress to portray Jean Grey in live-action, following Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner. ‘Brand New Day’ effectively serves as the launchpad for Jean Grey in ‘Thunderbolts’ director Jake Schreier’s upcoming ‘X-Men’ film.
All of this coincided with a remarkable commercial success. The audience turnout helped the fourth Holland-led Spider-Man installment surpass ‘Avengers: Endgame’ for the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time, raking in $360 million. Whether this secrecy strategy played a role in that success or simply generated months of free buzz remains a topic for industry discussion.
