‘Michael’ Sequel Buzz Is Growing as Insiders Discuss Future Eras of MJ’s Life
Biopics about music icons have proven to be a consistent box office success over the last decade, yet few have transformed their subjects’ life stories into a true cinematic franchise. Most tend to focus on a singular narrative, condensing years of triumphs and challenges into one film before moving on to the next project.
However, ‘Michael’ has been breaking that mold for months, achieving record-breaking success that has prompted Lionsgate and the Jackson estate to seriously contemplate what comes next. This film, which details Michael Jackson’s rise to fame, has already rewritten box office history for the biopic genre.
This success has fueled real momentum for a potential sequel, according to sources close to the production. Insiders indicate there is significant interest in exploring later chapters of Jackson’s life that the first film did not cover, including the “Dangerous” era, his 1993 Super Bowl halftime performance, his marriages, the relentless media scrutiny he faced, and the immense pressure that accompanied his global fame.
This ambition has been part of the film’s vision from the beginning. Entertainment attorney John Branca, co-executor of Jackson’s estate and a producer on ‘Michael,’ shared with The Informer that the idea of a sequel was always a goal, stating, “It was always our hope to have the first biopic with a sequel.”
The numbers supporting this discussion are hard to overlook. ‘Michael’ has made history as the first biographical film to exceed the $1 billion mark globally, making it the first Lionsgate release to reach that milestone. The film’s worldwide earnings include $371.8 million domestically and $629.8 million from international markets, allowing it to surpass both ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as the highest-grossing music biopic and ‘Oppenheimer’ as the highest-grossing biopic overall.
Branca has publicly acknowledged this historic achievement, reiterating the possibility of a sequel while celebrating the film’s billion-dollar success. “Think about this,” he remarked. “First billion-dollar biopic. Could it be the first biopic with a sequel?” He was careful to clarify that “nothing is set yet,” even as it became clear that the idea is being seriously considered behind the scenes.

The current film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and produced by Graham King, concludes well before many defining moments of Jackson’s adult life. Key events left unexplored include the record-setting Dangerous World Tour, the Super Bowl halftime show that attracted over 130 million viewers, his humanitarian efforts, fatherhood, and the final years of a career that was one of the most scrutinized in modern entertainment.
This leaves ample material for a sequel to draw from, and industry observers agree there is a clear appetite for it. A studio source close to the production succinctly stated, “But there is clearly more story to be told.”
The cast of the first film has also received significant acclaim, particularly Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew, who portrays the King of Pop. Branca specifically praised the ensemble’s performances while discussing the film’s success, saying, “Jaafar deserves an Academy Award. Colman Domingo, everybody. Miles, Nia Long, everybody. Graham King, Antoine Fuqua, what a team.”
For the moment, Lionsgate and the Jackson estate have not made any official announcements, but with the impressive box office results and Branca’s repeated hints, it seems the groundwork is being laid for a continuation.
