Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro believes that the remarkable success of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ could bode well for Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster, ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

During Disney’s quarterly earnings call on Wednesday, D’Amaro commended the impressive performance of Sony Pictures’ ‘Spider-Man’ film, describing its opening weekend as an “unbelievable result.” The movie reportedly generated $360 million in the U.S. during its debut weekend, surpassing Disney’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to achieve the largest domestic opening in history. It also quickly crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide.

While Sony holds the distribution rights for ‘Spider-Man’ films, Disney’s Marvel Studios continues to produce these titles. D’Amaro’s remarks served as both a congratulatory note to Sony and an affirmation of Marvel’s ongoing strength with one of its most beloved characters.

“I’d be remiss not to acknowledge and congratulate everyone on this past weekend’s record-breaking opening,” D’Amaro stated during the earnings call, crediting Sony, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and the broader Marvel team.

He emphasized that the film’s success indicates that audiences are still eager to attend major theatrical releases when the right film comes along.

“It’s one more example that audiences will turn out in force for great theatrical experiences,” D’Amaro said. He noted that Spider-Man remains one of the most recognizable characters in the world, even decades after his debut.

D’Amaro also highlighted the character’s significance across various sectors of Disney’s business, including consumer products, theme parks, and streaming services. He stated that the strong performance of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ demonstrates that the franchise still holds considerable appeal with audiences.

“And it goes without saying that the success of Spider-Man bodes well for our upcoming and highly anticipated ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ film,” D’Amaro remarked.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18 and will mark the first Avengers film since 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ The highly anticipated movie is expected to be one of Marvel’s biggest releases as the studio aims to rekindle excitement around its superhero universe.

The superhero genre has faced challenges in recent years, with several comic book films struggling to replicate the immense success seen prior to the pandemic. Disney has also been working to entice audiences back to theaters after years of evolving viewing habits.

The performance of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has provided Marvel with a significant boost at a time when the studio is seeking another global event. This success indicates that audiences remain interested in superhero narratives when they feature well-known characters and deliver a strong theatrical experience.

D’Amaro’s comments also shed light on the unique relationship between Disney and Sony. While the two companies compete in various entertainment sectors, they continue to collaborate on Spider-Man’s future through Marvel Studios’ involvement.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on the horizon, Disney hopes that the excitement generated by Spider-Man will carry over into the next significant chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether the film can achieve the same level of anticipation as ‘Endgame’ remains to be seen, but Disney clearly views Spider-Man’s record-breaking success as a promising indicator.
