Disney Channel revivals have proven to be a mixed bag in recent years, with nostalgia only carrying a show so far before audiences begin to question what made the original special. Fans of cherished Disney Channel series have become increasingly vocal about these follow-ups, often comparing each new episode to the version they grew up with.

‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ found itself at the center of this discussion as its run came to a close this week. The Disney+ sequel series was built around the concept of bringing back familiar faces from the original ‘Wizards of Waverly Place,’ but not every cast member returned to the family lair.

This absence has been highlighted by one of the actors who didn’t reprise their role. David DeLuise, who portrayed Selena Gomez’s on-screen father in the original series, remarked that the sequel “would not be over if the OG wizards were really there,” sharing this blunt critique on Instagram as the show’s finale aired on August 4.

DeLuise left his comment under a video shared by Entertainment Tonight featuring Gomez and David Henrie discussing the show’s third and final season. He concluded his message with a sharp remark, adding “Missed opportunity,” which resonated with fans, garnering over 2,000 likes in less than a day.

DeLuise’s frustration highlights a decision that influenced ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ from its initial announcement. The sequel series, first revealed in 2024, brought back Gomez and Henrie as executive producers reprising their original roles, while their on-screen brother Jake T. Austin did not return. The storyline instead indicated that his character had transformed the family sandwich shop into a multimillion-dollar empire and was now living on a yacht.

DeLuise himself was not part of the show’s early episodes, only appearing later as the series reintroduced additional familiar faces, including Maria Canals-Barrera, who played Russo family matriarch Theresa Russo. This gradual, partial reassembly of the original cast seems to be what DeLuise is referencing in his comment, suggesting that a fuller reunion could have altered the show’s fate significantly.

‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ ultimately aired for three seasons, totaling 35 episodes, though its third and final season concluded with a shortened four-episode finale that premiered on Tuesday night. This abbreviated final run contrasts with the show’s earlier success, as its first season premiere attracted 3.2 million views within its first 12 days of streaming, making it Disney Channel’s most-watched series premiere on Disney+ at that time.

DeLuise’s comment provides a notably candid perspective on the show’s conclusion, coming from someone who has firsthand experience with what made the original series resonate with audiences for four seasons. Whether a complete cast reunion would have truly changed the sequel’s trajectory remains a topic for debate, but DeLuise clearly feels the show missed an opportunity.
