Live-Action ‘Jetsons’ Movie Starring Jim Carrey Advances at Warner Bros
Warner Bros. has been diligently working on a live-action revival of one of animation’s most iconic space-age families. After a prolonged period of speculation, the project has officially taken a significant step forward. Efforts to bring this beloved Hanna-Barbera classic to the big screen have spanned over two decades, making this latest development a noteworthy milestone for a film that has seen multiple directors and numerous false starts.
‘The Jetsons’ first captivated audiences in 1962 as a futuristic counterpart to ‘The Flintstones,’ following George Jetson, his wife Jane, their children Judy and Elroy, robot maid Rosie, and dog Astro as they navigated flying cars, video chats, and other futuristic conveniences that felt incredibly advanced at the time.
The show’s unique mix of domestic sitcom humor and speculative technology has made it a recognizable franchise across generations, even as live-action adaptation attempts involving filmmakers like Adam Shankman, Robert Rodriguez, and Robert Zemeckis have repeatedly stalled.
Now, a live-action ‘The Jetsons’ movie is officially moving forward at Warner Bros., with Jim Carrey confirmed to star, as outlined in the studio’s investor relations materials detailing its upcoming theatrical slate. This confirmation places the long-awaited project alongside a series of other high-profile films slated for the studio’s 2027 release calendar and beyond, including Taylor Sheridan’s ‘F.A.S.T.,’ James Gunn’s ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ and the next installment of ‘The Matrix.’
Colin Trevorrow, the director behind the ‘Jurassic World’ trilogy, is set to direct the project, with Trevorrow and Joe Epstein in discussions to write the screenplay. Given Trevorrow’s success in reviving beloved franchises for modern audiences, Warner Bros. seems to be banking on his ability to translate nostalgic properties into contemporary blockbusters.
Carrey’s involvement marks a significant return to the high-concept, effects-driven comedy that characterized much of his earlier career. This follows his recent portrayal of Dr. Robotnik in all three ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ films, a franchise that has collectively surpassed $1 billion at the box office. Throughout his career, Carrey has earned a reputation for embodying larger-than-life, often heavily transformed characters, from ‘The Mask’ to ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas,’ making him an ideal choice for a role that will likely require a similarly outsized comedic presence.
The ‘Jetsons’ project now joins a broader lineup of films that Warner Bros. has confirmed, extending beyond its already-announced 2027 slate, which also features ‘Oceans’ starring Bradley Cooper and Margot Robbie, J.J. Abrams’ ‘The Great Beyond,’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.’ Looking further ahead, the studio’s plans include the Game of Thrones-universe film ‘Aegon’s Conquest,’ the next Batman installment, and now this ‘Jetsons’ adaptation alongside those other major projects.
As of now, no release date, cast beyond Carrey, or plot details have been confirmed for the film. The project’s placement among Warner Bros.’ ‘beyond 2027’ slate suggests that audiences may have to wait a while before Orbit City makes its way to theaters. Given the numerous previous attempts at this adaptation that have failed to reach production, this level of concrete studio confirmation signifies real progress for a project that has lingered in development limbo for decades.
With Trevorrow’s blockbuster experience and Carrey’s comedic talent now attached to a franchise that fans have longed to see reimagined, this ‘Jetsons’ revival finally appears to be gaining real momentum.
