Nicolas Cage’s ‘Madden’ Release Date Announced for Prime Video Streaming
Nicolas Cage’s upcoming sports drama ‘Madden’ is taking a different route than many anticipated. Instead of a full nationwide theatrical release, David O. Russell’s film will primarily be available through streaming, allowing Prime Video subscribers to enjoy the story of football legend John Madden from the comfort of their homes later this year.
According to Variety, Amazon MGM has scheduled ‘Madden’ to premiere on Prime Video on November 18. The film is still expected to have a limited theatrical run earlier in November to qualify for awards consideration, but it will not see a wide release in cinemas.
This decision is surprising given the talent involved. Directed by David O. Russell, known for award-winning films like ‘The Fighter’, ‘Silver Linings Playbook’, and ‘American Hustle’, the movie stars Nicolas Cage as John Madden, a prominent figure in football history, alongside Christian Bale, Kathryn Hahn, John Mulaney, Sienna Miller, and Shane Gillis.
The film will delve into Madden’s journey both on and off the football field. Before becoming a household name as a broadcaster, Madden was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in the 1970s, leading the team to its first Super Bowl victory. After retiring from coaching in 1979, he became one of the most recognized voices in sports television, serving as an NFL commentator for decades.
‘Madden’ will also highlight the personal aspects of his life, including his friendship with Raiders owner Al Davis, played by Christian Bale, and his relationship with his wife Virginia Madden, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn. The film will also cover Madden’s involvement in creating the Madden NFL video game series, which transformed his name into a global brand beyond football.
When the project was first announced in 2024, Russell described the film as a celebration of Madden’s personality and impact. He stated that the movie would focus on “the joy, humanity and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s.”
While the streaming release provides Prime Video with a significant title for its fall lineup, the choice to forgo a full theatrical release has raised some eyebrows. With Russell’s reputation as an Oscar-nominated filmmaker and Cage leading the cast, many expected Amazon MGM to position the film as a major contender for awards season in theaters.
This move follows Russell’s previous film, ‘Amsterdam’, which struggled at the box office. The 2022 historical comedy-drama featured a star-studded cast, including Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington, but only earned around $31 million worldwide against a reported $80 million budget.
Russell’s career has also been marred by controversy regarding reports of difficult behavior on past productions, which has influenced how some audiences and industry figures perceive his work. However, ‘Madden’ presents an opportunity for the director to return with a more personal narrative centered on a beloved American sports icon.
For now, fans will have to wait until November to see if Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of John Madden becomes one of the standout performances of the fall movie season. While it may not receive the traditional big-screen launch many expected, the film still holds the potential to draw attention due to its famous subject, impressive cast, and Prime Video release.
