‘X-Men’: Kit Connor Cast as Cyclops in Marvel’s Mutant Reboot
Marvel’s search for its new team of mutants has been progressing swiftly this summer, with fans closely following every rumor and meeting related to the studio’s upcoming reboot. While speculation about James Bond captured headlines for much of the season, the real excitement has been brewing behind the scenes regarding who will portray Marvel’s new X-Men.
This casting process has already revealed two significant names, with Samara Weaving reportedly securing the role of Emma Frost after a series of meetings with directors and studio executives over the summer. Now, another major piece of the puzzle appears to be in place, continuing the studio’s trend of evaluating multiple candidates before making final selections.
Marvel Studios has officially cast its Scott Summers for the new ‘X-Men’ film, with Deadline exclusively reporting that Kit Connor has been chosen to portray the mutant hero known as Cyclops. According to sources from the outlet, the casting process mirrored the approach taken for the Emma Frost role, with director Jake Schreier and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige meeting with several candidates before ultimately selecting Connor last week.
Sources informed Deadline that a small group of actors auditioned for the Cyclops role shortly after the Fourth of July holiday, with the studio engaging in significant discussions before finally choosing Connor to wear the character’s iconic visor. At the time of the report, neither Marvel nor Connor’s representatives responded to requests for comment regarding the casting news.
Connor is widely recognized for his role in Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper’, which has made him one of the more prominent young actors in the industry today. He has continued to expand his filmography beyond that breakout role, recently signing on to lead the upcoming murder-mystery thriller ‘One of Us’, which is set to begin filming in Northern Ireland.
The initiative to reintroduce the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been gaining momentum since Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, which brought characters like Cyclops back under Marvel’s direct control for the first time. The X-Men franchise was considered Fox’s most successful and profitable Marvel property, comprising seven main films along with a spinoff Wolverine trilogy that further developed the mutant aspect of the studio’s output.
Interest in the new project surged last spring when Schreier was confirmed as the director, followed shortly by the hiring of ‘Beef’ creator Lee Sung Jin and ‘The Bear’ co-showrunner Joanna Calo to write the screenplay. The involvement of this creative team has heightened expectations that the new film will focus on more grounded, character-driven storytelling, an approach Schreier has hinted at in previous comments about wanting to maintain the “interpersonal drama” that has always been a hallmark of X-Men comics, alongside their larger ideological themes.
With Connor now reportedly cast as Cyclops and Weaving previously linked to Emma Frost, Marvel seems to be steadily piecing together its new mutant roster ahead of an official announcement. While no release date for the film has been confirmed, the studio’s ongoing casting activity suggests that more reveals could be on the horizon.
