Warner Bros. Confirms New ‘Matrix’ Movie Is Officially Coming Details Inside
Warner Bros. has been quietly developing the next installment of one of cinema’s most iconic sci-fi franchises for the past two years, and the studio has now confirmed that the project is very much alive. Amid a massive slate reveal that included everything from a live-action ‘Jetsons’ film to a new Batman sequel, Warner Bros. reassured fans that its ‘Matrix’ revival is still on track.
The franchise’s last film, 2021’s ‘The Matrix Resurrections’, faced significant challenges at the box office, earning only $160 million against a $190 million budget. This led many to speculate whether the series had reached its conclusion. However, Warner Bros. decided to move forward with another installment, announcing in 2024 that a new ‘Matrix’ film would be developed under a different creative direction.
The new ‘Matrix’ movie has been officially confirmed as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s extensive movie slate, continuing the studio’s commitment to a franchise that redefined the sci-fi genre in 1999. This confirmation places the long-awaited project alongside other major announcements, including Jim Carrey’s live-action ‘Jetsons’ movie and Matt Reeves’ new Batman sequel, which is currently filming for a February 2028 release.
What sets this fifth installment apart from previous ‘Matrix’ films is the absence of Lana and Lilly Wachowski in the director’s chair. Drew Goddard, known for ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ and his Oscar-nominated screenplay for ‘The Martian’, has been chosen to write and direct the new film. This marks the first time the franchise will proceed without either Wachowski sister at the helm, although Lana Wachowski remains attached as an executive producer, ensuring some continuity in creative vision.

Jesse Ehrman, president of production at Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, described Goddard’s involvement as a genuine passion project rather than a studio directive. He explained that Goddard approached the studio with an idea that the team believed could authentically expand the world created by the Wachowskis over the last 25 years. Goddard himself has expressed similar sentiments, stating that the ‘Matrix’ films have profoundly impacted both cinema and his personal life.
Details about the plot of the new film remain closely guarded, with Warner Bros. indicating that the story will advance the franchise’s universe without deviating too far from the elements that made the original trilogy successful. Casting details are also unconfirmed, with neither Keanu Reeves nor Carrie-Anne Moss officially attached to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity. However, Reeves has previously mentioned he would be open to returning if Lana Wachowski personally invites him back into the franchise.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, Goddard provided a brief update on the project’s status, confirming it is actively in development. He stated, “Still in the works. I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.” This suggests that the script is still being developed, with no firm release date established for the project yet.
Given the mixed critical and commercial reception of ‘Resurrections’, which holds a 63% score on Rotten Tomatoes and fell short of recouping its budget, there is likely significant pressure on Goddard’s team to deliver a successful next chapter. With Warner Bros. now officially reaffirming the project’s place in its long-term slate alongside other major franchise endeavors, the studio appears committed to bringing this fifth ‘Matrix’ film to fruition, even without a confirmed timeline.
As Goddard continues to work on the script and no casting news emerges, fans may need to exercise patience before getting a glimpse of what this new chapter has in store.
