Wagner Moura Addresses Mister Sinister Casting Rumors for Upcoming ‘X-Men’ Film
The rumor mill surrounding Marvel’s X-Men casting has been in overdrive this summer, with fans analyzing every meeting, audition report, and casual remark for hints about the studio’s revamped mutant lineup. Among the names making the rounds, including Samara Weaving and Kit Connor, one specific actor has sparked significant online chatter regarding a potential role.
That buzz revolves around Wagner Moura, the acclaimed Brazilian actor known for his recent performances, who has been linked to the role of Mister Sinister, one of the X-Men’s most iconic and cunning villains. This character has been a topic of speculation in Marvel casting discussions for years, and Moura’s name has now joined the ongoing conversation.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley for The Last House, Moura addressed the swirling rumors about him portraying Mister Sinister in the upcoming ‘X-Men’ film, clarifying that despite the online chatter, he has not been contacted regarding the role.
He stated, “Dude, I’ve been reading these things on the internet, and people are sending that to me. I mean, I’m a fan of that whole entire universe, especially when I was a kid reading all those graphic novels and everything. But there’s nothing. No one contacted me about it. It’s just something that people read. But on the internet, I don’t know nothing honestly about it. I would love it.”
Mister Sinister made his debut in ‘The Uncanny X-Men’ #221 in 1987, created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Marc Silvestri as a new threat for the team, moving beyond the franchise’s typical reliance on Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
Originally Nathaniel Essex from Victorian London, the character is a human scientist fixated on creating a genetically perfect version of humanity, a goal that intensifies after he encounters mutants and the ancient villain Apocalypse. Instead of confronting heroes directly, Sinister often operates through manipulation and agents, including a storyline where he secretly influences Cyclops’ life from childhood.
This blend of scientific menace and psychological manipulation has made Mister Sinister a fan favorite for live-action adaptations, especially as Marvel seeks to establish its new mutant roster following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Since the conclusion of the Infinity Saga with ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the studio has gradually explored X-Men territory, notably with the introduction of Wanda and Pietro Maximoff in 2014 under a licensing agreement prior to the full franchise reboot now in progress.
Moura’s remarks come during a particularly active period for X-Men casting news, following reports linking Samara Weaving to Emma Frost and Kit Connor to Cyclops. This ongoing speculation highlights the immense interest in Marvel’s mutant reboot since director Jake Schreier joined the project, even as the studio keeps most casting decisions under wraps.
For now, Moura’s involvement remains purely speculative, but his enthusiastic response leaves fans hopeful. Given how quickly other rumored X-Men castings have transitioned from speculation to confirmation this summer, it wouldn’t be surprising if Moura’s name resurfaces as the film’s casting is finalized.
With no official word from Marvel and Moura himself acknowledging he’s as uninformed as everyone else, the mystery surrounding Mister Sinister continues.
