David Harbour Teases ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Will Challenge Red Guardian and Yelena’s Bond
The ‘Black Widow’ prequel series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe has emerged as one of the franchise’s most emotionally impactful narratives, focusing on the intricate familial ties formed between unexpected characters in extraordinary situations.
One of the most captivating dynamics has been the relationship between David Harbour’s Red Guardian and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova. What began as an antagonistic connection has blossomed into genuine affection and mutual respect throughout their shared MCU appearances. As the highly anticipated ensemble film ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ approaches, Harbour has shared insights into what this upcoming project means for their cherished relationship.
The characters first bonded in the 2021 film ‘Black Widow,’ where Harbour played Alexei Shostakov, a former Soviet super-soldier and reluctant father figure to both Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff and Florence Pugh’s Yelena.
Their relationship was further explored in the recent ‘Thunderbolts,’ which united a team of reformed anti-heroes and misfits from across the MCU. The chemistry between Harbour and Pugh resonated with audiences, establishing them as one of the franchise’s most beloved character pairings despite their complicated history.
In an interview at the premiere of his new series ‘DTF St. Louis,’ Harbour discussed his upcoming return as Red Guardian in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. According to a report from Deadline, Harbour hinted that the relationship between his character and Yelena will face significant challenges as the events of the 2026 film unfold. “You know that Yelena Belova and Red Guardian have a connection. If you saw ‘Thunderbolts,’ you know how much they love each other and how much they’re trying to help each other. And Doomsday will affect that relationship,” he stated.
Harbour’s comments suggest that the catastrophic events surrounding Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom, the main threat in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, will put immense pressure on the bonds these characters have built. Instead of allowing their familial connection to offer solace, the film seems poised to use their relationship as a source of conflict or tragedy.
This tonal shift marks a significant escalation from the more intimate character moments audiences experienced in ‘Thunderbolts,’ which heavily focused on these anti-heroes discovering purpose and belonging within their makeshift family.
Harbour also confirmed during his ‘DTF St. Louis’ interview that he has been deeply involved in reshoots and additional filming for the extensive MCU event. He shared his upcoming travel plans, indicating he would be heading to various locations to continue work on the film. These reshoots imply that Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers are still refining the ensemble’s screen time and character arcs as the December 2026 release date approaches.
Beyond his interactions with Yelena, Harbour revealed that he is developing significant chemistry with other members of the Thunderbolts roster who are transitioning into ‘Doomsday.’ He mentioned cultivating a “brotherhood” with Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier and Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent, describing their dynamic as a fun “bromance.” This expanded character focus suggests that the former anti-hero team will play a central role in the film’s ensemble structure.
