Box office records have been shattered at an astonishing rate since Tom Holland’s latest portrayal of Peter Parker hit theaters. However, this week’s record chase feels distinct from the usual updates, as it focuses on a longer stretch of sustained success rather than just a single-day figure or opening weekend tally.

This distinction is significant because while holding the top position for one weekend is impressive, maintaining record-breaking numbers day after day through a full Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday is a much tougher challenge that few films have accomplished.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has decisively cleared this hurdle. According to Sony Pictures, the film has surpassed $500 million in North America within just seven days, officially becoming the fastest movie to reach this half-billion milestone, overtaking ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which achieved the same feat in eight days back in April 2019.

By the end of its first full week, the film’s cumulative domestic gross was estimated at $508.7 million, marking the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history. This places ‘Brand New Day’ in an exclusive group, as only 23 films have ever crossed the $500 million mark domestically, with just six belonging to the MCU.

The daily figures contributing to this milestone have been equally remarkable. ‘Brand New Day’ recorded the biggest Monday in box office history with $47 million, surpassing the previous record held by 2018’s ‘Black Panther’ at $40 million, followed by the largest Tuesday ever with $42 million, and a Wednesday total of $32.7 million, ranking as the second-best Wednesday of all time, only behind ‘The Force Awakens’ during its 2015 Christmas run.

This rapid pace has also made ‘Brand New Day’ the fastest film to cross $400 million domestically, achieving this in just four days, and the second-fastest movie ever to reach $1 billion globally, hitting that milestone in six days, just behind ‘Endgame’s’ five-day record. The film’s worldwide total now exceeds $1.155 billion, already surpassing ‘Toy Story 5’ to become the highest-grossing movie of the year.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige commented on the milestone, stating to Variety, “I did not expect ‘Endgame’s’ [domestic] record to be beat, but I couldn’t be happier that it was beat this past weekend by our 38th MCU movie.” His remarks reflect the broader surprise surrounding the film’s performance, given how untouchable ‘Endgame’s’ records had seemed since 2019.

Looking ahead, current projections suggest ‘Brand New Day’ could eventually reach a domestic total of around $921.4 million, positioning it as the second-highest-grossing domestic release of all time, just behind ‘The Force Awakens’ at $936.7 million. With no major new releases on the immediate horizon and IMAX screens just now opening to the film, that ceiling could rise even higher before its run comes to a close.

For a franchise now on its eleventh live-action installment, breaking a record that many thought was permanently out of reach is one of the most remarkable box office achievements in recent memory. Whether ‘Brand New Day’ can eventually challenge ‘Endgame’s’ full global total remains the last major question left.
