Disney’s ‘Descendants’ franchise has spent years exploring the children of its most iconic heroes and villains, creating fresh storylines that have turned it into one of the studio’s most dependable young-adult properties. Each new installment has successfully reframed classic fairy tales through the eyes of a younger generation, and this formula has proven to be effective.

However, the franchise is about to take an intriguing turn. Instead of continuing to follow the offspring of Disney’s main protagonists and antagonists, the focus will shift to a group of characters who have traditionally remained in the background: the sidekicks who have supported the heroes without ever stepping into the spotlight.

On Friday, Disney announced the expansion of the ‘Descendants’ universe with a new film titled ‘Hidden Heroes: A Descendants Story,’ which is set to begin production next week. This film will center on the offspring of beloved sidekicks from ‘Aladdin,’ ‘The Emperor’s New Groove,’ ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ This project marks a significant departure from the franchise’s usual focus on the children of legendary heroes and villains, as it will instead highlight a group of young recruits training at a secretive location known as Sidekick Academy.

The official synopsis reveals a hidden portal at the heart of each fairy tale that leads to this training facility, where the descendants of legendary sidekicks are challenged to prove themselves among the elite ranks of heroic partners. When a villainous duo threatens the academy, the recruits must unite without assistance from heroes or their own parents, relying solely on their newly acquired skills to save the fairytale realm.

The cast features a creative blend of Disney’s animated history. Dior Goodjohn, recognized for ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians,’ will lead as Jennie, the daughter of Genie from ‘Aladdin.’ Meanwhile, Momona Tamada, known from ‘The Baby-Sitters Club,’ plays Zara, the daughter of Yzma from ‘The Emperor’s New Groove.’

Joining them are Jacob Rodriguez from ‘Tell Me Lies’ as Kronk Jr., son of Kronk from ‘The Emperor’s New Groove,’ Eva Fossaceca Smedley of ‘Welcome to Flatch’ as Meri, daughter of Merryweather from ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ and Harry Jones as Lou, son of Lumiere from ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ Rhys Dawkins, Connor Wong, and Kyra Wong will also appear as the Potts Siblings, a trio of children belonging to Mrs. Potts from ‘Beauty and the Beast.’

Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, shared insights into this new direction, stating, “One of the things that has always made ‘Descendants’ so special is the way it invites audiences to experience familiar Disney stories through an entirely new perspective. With ‘Hidden Heroes,’ we’re finally putting the sidekicks center stage, because they’ve always been an essential part of Disney’s greatest adventures.”

Jude Weng is set to direct the project, with a script written by Tamara Chestna, Eydie Faye, and Emma Fletcher. The film’s greenlight follows the success of ‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland,’ continuing a trend of exploring new corners of the Disney animated canon through fresh young ensembles.

For a franchise that thrives on reimagining familiar characters through new perspectives, giving the sidekicks their own dedicated spotlight seems like a natural progression. Whether audiences will respond as enthusiastically to Genie’s daughter and Kronk Jr. as they did to previous ‘Descendants’ leads remains to be seen once production wraps and the film approaches its release.
