Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Aims to Be the Highest-Grossing R-Rated Film Ever
Christopher Nolan has established himself as a master of ambitious filmmaking, and with ‘The Odyssey,’ he is achieving unprecedented box office success. This adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic, filmed entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras and with a reported budget of $250 million, marks Nolan’s most expensive project to date and one of his most technically challenging.
Since its release on July 17, the film has shattered expectations for an R-rated, nearly three-hour sword-and-sandal epic, achieving the largest opening weekend for a non-franchised R-rated movie. This momentum has continued, with the film experiencing only a 30 percent drop in its second weekend, a significantly smaller decline compared to Nolan’s previous film, ‘Oppenheimer.’
This consistency has propelled ‘The Odyssey’ past a remarkable milestone, having already grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide, making it Nolan’s highest-grossing film, surpassing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ at $1.085 billion. Current projections indicate that the film could finish its theatrical run with a total between $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion globally, positioning it to potentially overtake ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ $1.338 billion as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
This achievement is particularly impressive given that ‘The Odyssey’ has yet to open in China, the world’s second-largest movie market, suggesting there is still significant box office potential ahead. With IMAX screenings selling out weeks in advance and demand remaining strong, the film’s path to breaking records looks increasingly likely.

In addition to breaking Nolan’s box office records, ‘The Odyssey’ has also become the highest-grossing film for stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson. The film’s ensemble cast, which includes Tom Holland and Zendaya, has contributed to both critical acclaim and audience turnout, with the movie tying the record for Nolan’s highest Rotten Tomatoes score alongside ‘Memento’ and ‘The Dark Knight,’ supported by an impressive 97 percent audience approval rating.
IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond highlighted the film’s cultural impact, stating that ‘The Odyssey’ has transitioned from a blockbuster hit to a genuine global cultural event. This reflects the significant contribution of IMAX screenings, which have added hundreds of millions of dollars to the film’s overall global earnings.
Despite its historic success, ‘The Odyssey’ faces competition at the summer box office. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which also stars Holland and Zendaya, has claimed the title of 2026’s highest-grossing film overall, occasionally overshadowing ‘The Odyssey’ in weekly box office rankings, even as both films continue to perform exceptionally well.
Together, these two films have already amassed over $2.1 billion at the global box office, quickly approaching the $2.4 billion combined total of 2023’s “Barbenheimer” phenomenon. With ‘The Odyssey’ maintaining strong demand in theaters and its highly anticipated release in China set for August 14, its final box office tally could rise even further before its theatrical run concludes.
