The season three finale of ‘House of the Dragon’ introduced a significant alteration to George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’, and showrunner Ryan Condal has provided insights into the reasoning behind it.

The most notable change occurs during Rhaenyra Targaryen’s final moments. After taking increasingly drastic measures to solidify her claim, Rhaenyra reveals to the citizens of King’s Landing the prophecy of the White Walkers and the hero destined to save the world. This pivotal scene is absent from Martin’s book.

In ‘Fire & Blood’, there is no instance where Rhaenyra discloses the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy to the people of King’s Landing. The prophecy itself is also presented differently in the historical narrative of the Targaryen civil war. So, what prompted the show to include this moment?

During a press conference regarding season three, executive producer and showrunner Ryan Condal explained that this scene was crafted to illustrate Rhaenyra’s transformation. At this point, she is no longer merely trying to assert her right to the throne; she is positioning herself as someone with a unique destiny.

Condal noted that Rhaenyra’s actions are already depicted in the book as becoming increasingly unpopular and tyrannical, which allowed the series to showcase her evolution in a new light.

“Targaryens say crazy shit all the time,” Condal remarked, humorously considering how the people of King’s Landing might have reacted to Rhaenyra’s proclamation. He elaborated that the writers aimed for the scene to create a significant shift in public perception of Rhaenyra.

For the common folk listening to her, her speech might not have come across as a groundbreaking revelation. Instead, it could have sounded like yet another powerful Targaryen making grandiose claims about herself.

This contrast was crucial, especially since Rhaenyra had just ordered the execution of a religious leader who opposed her. Moments later, she stood before the public, presenting herself as their potential savior. The intentional juxtaposition highlighted her complex character.

Thus, the finale signifies a crucial turning point for Rhaenyra. Her quest for power transcends mere victory in war; it also encompasses her self-perception and belief in her own destiny.

Emma D’Arcy, who portrays Rhaenyra, also discussed the character’s evolving relationship with power. D’Arcy mentioned that the narrative raises questions about “How do you manage the human ego in the political sphere?” This inquiry may become even more significant in the upcoming final season.

HBO has confirmed that ‘House of the Dragon’ will return for a fourth and final season. According to Condal, viewers can anticipate an expanded storyline with new characters, dragons, and locations.

“We’re very excited to get back in,” Condal expressed, promising what he believes will be “a very worthy final season.”

With Rhaenyra now more resolute than ever and the Dance of the Dragons approaching its climax, season four could diverge even further from Martin’s original history.
