Marvel Studios has been teasing ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ throughout the summer with carefully staged costume reveals and prop displays, providing fans with just enough material to fuel their imaginations without confirming much. This strategy proved successful at San Diego Comic-Con, where a particular exhibit ignited weeks of speculation among fans.

The display featured a costume labeled the “Latverian Witch,” set against a stained-glass backdrop and designed with clear visual connections to Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. The green robes, silver face mask, and diamond-motif belt buckle immediately drew parallels to Doom’s own aesthetic, leading to a flurry of theories about who might don the outfit in the final film.

The intrigue deepened as the convention progressed, with Marvel showcasing additional variations of the costume in yellow and purple, and later confirming a red version. It appears that multiple witches, rather than just one character, will be part of Doom’s inner circle, prompting fans to spend weeks matching each colored robe to specific Marvel characters who might fill these roles.

One of the most persistent theories revolves around Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, who has not been seen in the MCU since her apparent death in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’ According to this theory, she would be reimagined as a Latverian character, recruited by Doom to harness her chaos magic for his multiversal goals. Adding to this speculation, Marvel also unveiled a Doctor Doom action figure featuring red energy attachments, a color closely linked to Wanda’s powers throughout the franchise.

Beyond Wanda, fans have proposed a variety of other candidates for the remaining witch costumes. Some theories suggest variants of Wanda Maximoff, Maria Rambeau, and Peggy Carter could all be part of Doom’s witches, while others have pushed back, suggesting characters like Agatha Harkness or Sylvie, pointing out that the robe colors seem to echo the visual themes of the Infinity Stones.

Adding another layer to the enigma, some insiders have hinted that Doom could enter the film already married, with the witch potentially serving as his wife rather than a recruited ally. In this scenario, her death could act as a catalyst pushing Doom toward the destructive path anticipated in the film. Other sources have noted that in the comics, these witches are often associated with Cynthia von Doom, Doctor Doom’s mother, opening yet another avenue for speculation about these characters’ identities.

This kind of intentionally ambiguous marketing has become a hallmark for Marvel ahead of major crossover events, utilizing costume displays and prop reveals to spark ongoing discussions without revealing plot details. Given how tightly the studio has controlled casting announcements throughout ‘Doomsday’s’ promotional campaign, it’s likely that fans will have to wait for the film’s release for definitive answers.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to premiere in theaters on December 18, the intrigue surrounding Doctor Doom’s witches is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
