‘House of the Dragon’ Stars Discuss Rhaenyra’s Daenerys Connection and Season 4 Insights
The third season of ‘House of the Dragon’ concluded with Rhaenyra Targaryen in a drastically different position than at the start. Following a season marked by conflict, loss, and tough decisions, the queen is increasingly prepared to resort to violence to safeguard her claim to the Iron Throne.
This transformation has sparked comparisons to Daenerys Targaryen from ‘Game of Thrones’. While both characters feel destined for greatness, their journeys to power diverge significantly.
In a post-finale discussion, ‘House of the Dragon’ co-creator and showrunner Ryan Condal expressed his appreciation for the parallels drawn between the two series. “I think that’s wonderful if people draw parallels between this and the original series,” Condal remarked, noting that both shows delve into the impact of the Iron Throne on those who desire it or already possess it.
Condal highlighted a key distinction between Rhaenyra and Daenerys. “Daenerys only got to the Iron Throne at the very end, after she had destroyed the city,” he explained. In contrast, Rhaenyra has already tasted power and is now being shaped by the pressures of maintaining it.
According to Condal, this theme of pride and power, along with the corrupting influence of authority, resonates throughout the entire ‘Game of Thrones’ universe. “It’s pride and power, and how power corrupts, and how far it corrupts,” he elaborated.
Emma D’Arcy, who portrays Rhaenyra, views the character’s evolution as a crucial narrative element. D’Arcy emphasized that the writers aimed for the audience to grasp how someone can gradually adopt authoritarian tendencies. “I really wanted to make sure that that journey was a legible one,” D’Arcy stated, adding that the storyline prompts reflection on how individuals handle power and how repeated trauma and political strain can erode empathy.

The finale underscored this transformation vividly. Rhaenyra commands Daemon to assault Tumbleton and eliminate the Hightower leadership, resulting in significant casualties on both sides, including the deaths of Ormund Hightower and Roddy the Ruin. Ulf and Silverwing also turn against those they were meant to assist.
While the battle rages, Rhaenyra engages in a different conflict in King’s Landing. She insists on being officially acknowledged as queen, but the High Septon declines. In response, Rhaenyra orders his execution.
Following this shocking act, she reveals to the citizens of King’s Landing the Targaryen prophecy concerning the White Walkers and the foretold hero. This moment marks a significant deviation from George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’.
Condal confirmed that this speech is absent from the book, explaining that the writers aimed to illustrate a pivotal shift in Rhaenyra’s rapport with her subjects. “We wanted a real seismic change, a sea change in Rhaenyra’s relationship to her people,” he noted.
The finale delivers another heart-wrenching moment when Helaena takes her own life. Rhaenyra later uncovers a tapestry completed by Helaena, depicting what seems to be a grim future for the queen.
As the narrative progresses toward its concluding chapter, Condal informed reporters that the creative team has already outlined the main storyline for Season 4, with a draft of the first episode submitted to HBO.
While a release date remains unconfirmed, Condal promises an even grander final season. “As crazy and big as Season 3 was, I think Season 4 is going to be even bigger,” he asserted.
He also hinted at the introduction of new characters, dragons, and locations, expressing enthusiasm for bringing the story to its conclusion. “We’re very excited to get back in,” Condal said. “We have new characters, and new dragons and new locations all to come, that I think are gonna make it a very worthy, final season.”
With Rhaenyra now closer than ever to embodying the type of ruler her adversaries feared, the final season promises to be the most perilous chapter of the Targaryen civil war yet.
