DC Studios has been navigating an ambitious lineup that spans both theaters and streaming for nearly three years, but this balancing act has recently appeared more precarious than fans would prefer. With box office fluctuations and a series of behind-the-scenes changes, the studio, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, has had to make tough decisions about where to direct its efforts. As 2026 approaches, this tension has become increasingly pronounced.

The television division of the DCU has faced significant setbacks lately. Writer David Jenkins revealed that his version of ‘Booster Gold’ will not be progressing at DC Studios and HBO Max. This project was initially announced in January 2023 as part of Gunn’s original Chapter One slate. Jenkins had submitted his pilot script in June, leaving fans shocked by how swiftly the show transitioned from a completed draft to being shelved.

According to Superman Saga News on X, referencing a report from The Ankler, DC Studios is reportedly shifting its focus toward theatrical films instead of HBO series moving forward. The same update indicates that DC Studios and HBO are still very committed to bringing ‘Booster Gold’ to life and are actively searching for new writers to lead the project. The Ankler’s report highlights how Gunn and Safran collaborated with HBO chief Casey Bloys to decide the show’s fate, framing the decision as a strategic creative shift rather than a simple cancellation.

At the heart of this project is Michael Jon Carter, a disgraced athlete from the 25th century who steals advanced technology to travel back in time and impersonate a superhero. Gunn has previously described the concept as embodying imposter syndrome within the superhero genre, a satirical angle that has kept the project on the studio’s radar despite ongoing changes behind the scenes. With HBO Max still dedicated to the idea and a search for a new writer underway, ‘Booster Gold’ remains part of DC’s evolving television lineup alongside projects like ‘Paradise Lost’ and ‘Lanterns’.

The timing of this shift adds further significance to the focus on theatrical releases. Reports suggest that Paramount may impose restrictions on Warner Bros properties following its acquisition, and Supergirl’s disappointing box office performance has intensified scrutiny on upcoming DC films like ‘Clayface’ and ‘Man of Tomorrow’. ‘Clayface’ is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11, 2026, providing the studio with another opportunity to demonstrate its priorities.

Regardless of the path DC Studios ultimately chooses, fans of ‘Booster Gold’ have endured more false starts than nearly any other DCU project. With a new writer search in progress and the franchise seemingly leaning more toward the big screen, do you still hope to see ‘Booster Gold’, or has this ongoing reshuffling caused you to lose faith in its arrival on HBO Max?
