Few films have transformed a single role into such career leverage as Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the titular doll in 2023’s ‘Barbie.’ The movie quickly became a cultural sensation, grossing $1.448 billion worldwide and establishing itself as Warner Bros.’ biggest box office success ever, elevating Robbie and co-star Ryan Gosling to the status of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars.

This monumental success should have made a sequel a mere formality, especially since studios often rush to capitalize on a billion-dollar hit. However, ‘Barbie 2’ has been mired in negotiation limbo for years, with Warner Bros. racing against a firm deadline. The rights to the franchise will revert to Mattel in December unless the studio secures deals with Robbie, Gosling, and director Greta Gerwig.

Recent reports have shed light on Robbie’s earnings from the original film, providing context for the prolonged negotiations. It’s been revealed that Robbie earned over $50 million from her acting and producing roles in the first ‘Barbie,’ a figure that significantly overshadows the $20 million payday Gosling is reportedly seeking for the sequel. This disparity helps clarify why studio executives view her compensation as the primary sticking point in ongoing discussions.

The difference in earning potential stems from a structural detail in their original agreements. Neither Robbie nor Gosling had a sequel clause in their contracts, meaning Warner Bros. must negotiate a completely new deal rather than simply exercising an option, a situation that has become increasingly common in Hollywood.

Warner Bros. has reportedly made over six separate offers to the film’s creative team in the past three years, all of which have been rejected. Reports indicate that negotiations have stalled over profit-participation terms, with Robbie and Gosling advocating for a share of the sequel’s future box office earnings in addition to their base salaries. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has been hesitant to approve such arrangements.

A spokesperson for Warner Bros. countered the narrative that Zaslav specifically rejected the terms, stating that talent representatives declined the studio’s most recent offer, which was among the largest ever made for a single film, without providing a counteroffer. Studio co-chairs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca have also confirmed the stalemate, acknowledging that despite having a rights deal with Mattel and making substantial offers, an agreement remains elusive.

Notably, Gerwig and her longtime writing partner Noah Baumbach have a concept ready for the sequel, but they are withholding details from the studio until contracts are finalized, adding another layer of leverage to the already tense negotiations.

Even if Warner Bros. manages to finalize a deal before the December deadline, filming wouldn’t commence immediately due to the packed schedules of both stars. Robbie is currently working on an ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ prequel, Gosling has commitments to ‘Ghost Rider’ and ‘Star Wars: Starfighter,’ and Gerwig is preparing to launch her Netflix adaptation of ‘Narnia.’ This means production would likely be delayed well into next year, regardless of how swiftly terms are settled.

If the December deadline passes without an agreement, the future of the franchise would shift entirely to Mattel, potentially resulting in a completely new cast, director, and creative direction for any upcoming ‘Barbie’ film. Given Robbie’s pivotal role in the original’s cultural impact, replacing her would pose a significant risk for a franchise built around her unique interpretation of the character.

With only months left before Warner Bros. loses control of the sequel, this newly disclosed earnings gap highlights just how complex it has become to transform a billion-dollar cultural moment into a sustainable franchise.
