Disney Confirms ‘Kingdom Hearts’ Is Now a $1 Billion Gaming Franchise
‘Kingdom Hearts‘ has spent nearly 25 years executing one of gaming’s most unique crossovers, merging Disney’s cherished characters with Square Enix’s Final Fantasy universe in a way that resonates with fans. What started in 2002 as an unconventional experiment pairing anime heroes with iconic Disney realms has expanded to include 13 games. This week, Disney marked a significant milestone for the series that it has never publicly acknowledged before, even as fans eagerly await the franchise’s long-anticipated fourth mainline installment.
The franchise’s enduring appeal has become particularly relevant this year, with ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ still in development and fans yearning for any indication of progress after years of relative silence. Anticipation peaked ahead of this weekend’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where the series will finally receive a dedicated spotlight for the first time since 2015.
In a corporate blog post prior to the panel, Disney confirmed that ‘Kingdom Hearts’ has officially surpassed the billion-dollar mark as a gaming franchise. Sean Shoptaw, executive of Disney Games Group, made the announcement, revealing that nine of the company’s game franchises have each grossed over $1 billion at retail, with ‘Kingdom Hearts’ and ‘Marvel Strike Force’ specifically highlighted.
While the exact phrasing left some ambiguity regarding whether this figure pertains to individual titles or the franchise as a whole, it marks the first time Disney has publicly recognized ‘Kingdom Hearts’ achieving this financial milestone. Given that the series has been releasing games for nearly 24 years, it’s likely the franchise crossed this threshold quietly some time ago, making this more of a symbolic acknowledgment than breaking financial news.
Disney’s announcement comes just before “Deep Dive Into Kingdom Hearts,” a dedicated D23 panel scheduled for Saturday, August 15, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. PT at the Anaheim Convention Center. The session will feature Nana Gadd from Disney and Pixar Games, Square Enix’s Tai Yasue, and voice actors Haley Joel Osment and David Gallagher, who voice Sora and Riku, respectively.
This guest list has sparked speculation that the panel could unveil a significant update on ‘Kingdom Hearts 4,’ especially since Yasue is widely believed to be co-directing the sequel. The presentation is officially centered around celebrating 25 years of the franchise, with the true anniversary arriving in 2027, though Disney and Square Enix have not confirmed whether new ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ footage will be revealed.
‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ was first announced in April 2022, and aside from a brief teaser earlier this year and new footage that emerged during a June Nintendo Direct, specific details have been scarce. This lack of information has only heightened expectations for this weekend’s panel, especially after Disney began promoting the franchise actively outside the convention space in the days leading up to the event.
Adding to the excitement, a ‘Kingdom Hearts’ collection featuring all three mainline games is set to release in October across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, although a specific date has yet to be confirmed. Fans are also hopeful that the panel might address rumors of a ‘Kingdom Hearts’ crossover appearing in an upcoming season of ‘Fortnite.’
With the franchise’s billion-dollar status now confirmed and a dedicated panel finally scheduled, ‘Kingdom Hearts’ seems to be entering a truly pivotal phase after years of relative quiet. Between the financial milestone, the upcoming remastered collection, and the ongoing mystery surrounding ‘Kingdom Hearts 4,’ this weekend’s D23 festivities could mark a significant turning point for the franchise’s future.
