Aaron Pierre Shines at ‘Lanterns’ Premiere Ahead of Release Date
DC Studios has been diligently reconstructing its cinematic and television universe under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran, and ‘Lanterns’ stands out as one of the most eagerly awaited components of that vision.
Described as a detective story influenced by series like ‘True Detective’ and ‘Slow Horses,’ the show features two contrasting Green Lanterns delving into a dark, Earth-centric mystery in the American heartland, offering a notably grounded perspective for a franchise typically centered on cosmic power rings.
As the premiere date draws near, excitement has surged, fueled by a consistent flow of trailers, first-look images, and viral moments featuring its stars. The official trailer premiered at Comic-Con this year, providing fans with their most comprehensive glimpse yet at the finished visual effects and footage ahead of the series’ launch. With the series set to debut in just days, all eyes were on Los Angeles this week as the cast walked the red carpet together.
Aaron Pierre, portraying John Stewart, made a striking entrance at the ‘Lanterns’ premiere on Thursday, August 13, at the Paramount Theatre in Los Angeles. His appearance quickly gained traction online, with fans applauding the charisma he brought to the carpet just days before they get their first full look at his portrayal as the latest Green Lantern recruit.
This vibrant red carpet presence has become a hallmark for Pierre during the show’s promotional phase. He recently went viral for flawlessly reciting the Green Lantern Oath alongside a co-host during a live CBS Mornings segment, delivering the iconic pledge “In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight” without a hitch, further solidifying his connection to the role in the eyes of devoted fans.
The series features Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, the original Green Lantern of Earth, alongside Pierre as John Stewart, a new recruit whom Jordan is tasked with training as his eventual successor. According to the show’s official description, Stewart is viewed as an anomaly in the Lantern Corps’ history, having been recruited directly by the Guardians of the Universe instead of being selected by a power ring, which is the standard procedure for all previous Lanterns.
The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald, Nathan Fillion reprising his role as Guy Gardner, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, and Nicole Ari Parker, among others. Filming occurred in Los Angeles from February to July of last year, with James Hawes directing the first two episodes, while Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov directed the remaining episodes of the season.
‘Lanterns’ is set to premiere on Sunday, August 16, on HBO and HBO Max, with the season consisting of eight episodes airing weekly until early October. Fans can look forward to a summer-to-fall rollout that will explore John Stewart’s military background and complex family history.
With the red carpet premiere now complete and the series’ official debut just around the corner, ‘Lanterns’ is poised to be one of the most closely followed television projects in the DCU. With the dynamic partnership between Chandler and Pierre and the show’s grounded, investigative narrative, expectations are high as we approach its opening weekend, especially given the buzz surrounding Pierre’s promotional appearances.
