New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Theater Standee Reveals Doctor Doom on His Throne
Marvel Studios has been generating excitement for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ over the past few months, revealing glimpses of its villain’s world through convention displays and collectible items ahead of the film’s release. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, this movie unites heroes from three different universes as they confront an unprecedented existential threat, drawing inspiration from several beloved comic arcs for its central storyline.
The marketing strategy has focused heavily on Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom, providing fans with sneak peeks of his Latverian throne room long before the film hits theaters. In July, Marvel Studios showcased a detailed replica of that throne room at a Shanghai expo, featuring green stained-glass panels and imagery from the film’s marketing, although the throne itself was notably absent.
That absence has now been addressed. A newly discovered AMC theater standee offers fans their first clear view of Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom seated on his throne, marking the character’s live-action debut in this iconic position. The standee, spotted by a Reddit user at their local theater, prominently displays the phrase “12.18.26 is Doomsday” below the image, indicating the film’s release date on December 18.
The standee replicates the grand steps leading up to the throne first seen at the Shanghai expo, with green paneling on either side that echoes the film’s teaser poster and the familiar Avengers logo design. Featuring Doom prominently on his throne provides the marketing campaign with its most direct glimpse of how the villain will command the screen when the movie finally arrives.
The throne depicted in the standee represents a significant shift from the character’s traditional portrayals in comics. In various comic versions, Doctor Doom’s throne has often appeared as a simple wooden seat with a medieval flair, ornate yet relatively understated compared to what is being crafted for the film.
In contrast, the cinematic version emphasizes scale and intimidation, with steps designed so that Doom sits noticeably higher than anyone approaching him. This design choice aligns with the character’s expanded role in the story, as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is expected to draw from multiple comic arcs, including elements of the 1984 ‘Secret Wars’ series and Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić’s 2015 ‘Secret Wars’ storyline, both of which position Doom at the center of a vast multiversal power struggle.
The theater standee isn’t the only recent glimpse fans have had of Doom claiming his seat of power. Hot Toys has also unveiled a highly detailed 1/6-scale collectible figure depicting Doom in a strikingly similar pose, allowing collectors to have their own lifelike version of the character on his throne ahead of the film’s release.
With the throne room now confirmed and increasingly detailed across various promotional formats, Marvel Studios seems to be building significant momentum for Doom’s introduction as the MCU’s next major antagonist. Between the Shanghai expo display, the new theater standees, and the Hot Toys reveal, fans have ample opportunities to examine how imposing this version of the villain is shaping up to be before his big-screen debut.
As ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ approaches its release, fans can expect Marvel Studios to continue ramping up the promotional efforts as more theaters begin to install similar standees nationwide.
