‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 Premiere Breaks Apple TV Viewing Records
After a three-year hiatus, ‘Ted Lasso’ has made a triumphant return to the pitch, and it seems audiences were eagerly awaiting its comeback. The Jason Sudeikis-led comedy premiered on Apple TV amidst significant anticipation, especially following a season three finale that many believed marked the show’s farewell.
However, that assumption proved to be incorrect. In season four, Ted shifts his focus from Premier League aspirations to coaching a second-division women’s football team back in Richmond, and fans quickly tuned in to see the new direction.
According to Nielsen data shared by Apple, the season four premiere amassed an impressive 296.6 million viewing minutes during its launch window in the United States on August 4 and August 5. This remarkable figure establishes the return of ‘Ted Lasso’ as the largest launch ever recorded for any Apple TV season or series debut, easily surpassing the previous record of 215.1 million viewing minutes set by season three in 2023.
The premiere’s success extended beyond breaking its own records. As reported by Apple, the 296.6 million minutes also outperformed the launches of other recent hits on the platform, such as ‘Severance’ and ‘Pluribus,’ solidifying it as the strongest debut window in Apple TV history.
A significant portion of this total came from a single day. On August 5, ‘Ted Lasso’ became the most-streamed program in the entire country, with viewers logging over 200 million minutes in just that twenty-four-hour period. For a show that had been off the air for over three years, this level of single-day viewership is a clear indication that the audience remained engaged.
The excitement surrounding the show’s return is understandable, given how open-ended the previous season’s finale felt. Season three’s May 2023 finale, titled “So Long, Farewell,” concluded several major character arcs and was widely perceived as a series conclusion, making the announcement of a fourth season a surprising revival.
Sudeikis returns alongside familiar cast members including Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift, with the ensemble expanding to include newcomers Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern, and Grant Feely. Sudeikis continues to develop and executive produce the series alongside Hunt, Bill Lawrence, and Joe Kelly, with Goldstein also contributing as a writer and executive producer.
This returning creative team seems to have preserved the show’s signature tone, even as it transitions to underdog, second-division stakes. While it may appear to be a narrative downgrade for Ted, the impressive numbers indicate that the series still resonates strongly with viewers.

Whether this initial surge in viewership will continue throughout the season remains uncertain, as Nielsen’s complete streaming data for the week of the premiere, covering August 3 through August 9, will not be available for several more weeks. New episodes of ‘Ted Lasso’ will continue to be released weekly on Wednesdays, providing Apple with a steady stream of viewership data to analyze in the coming months.
For now, the takeaway is clear: a show many fans thought was finished has returned after a three-year gap and instantly become the biggest launch in Apple TV’s history. Given the scale of this premiere, it’s hard to believe Apple isn’t already contemplating the future of Ted’s journey.
