Summer 2026 has quietly emerged as a season filled with dinosaur films, and ‘The End of Oak Street‘ is one of the more surprising entries in this lineup. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, known for ‘It Follows,’ this film marks his return after nearly eight years and combines classic Amblin-style sci-fi with time travel, featuring a star-studded cast.

Set in the early 1980s, the narrative revolves around the seemingly typical Platt family, consisting of Denise, Greg, their two children, and a dog named Starbuck. Early signs of tension appear between Denise and Greg, particularly over his need to leave a block party for a pizza delivery, while Denise secretly works on a book that hints at her desire for a different life.

Their fragile normalcy is shattered when mysterious lights, building over several nights, culminate in a cosmic event that transports the entire Oak Street neighborhood millions of years into the past, right into dinosaur territory. With no escape routes and dwindling supplies, the Platts and their neighbors must fortify their homes and fight for survival against creatures they cannot comprehend.

After days of desperate searching, Denise and Greg stumble upon a strange, temporary bubble that seems to act as a portal back to their time, only for it to vanish before they can utilize it. Their new mission becomes finding another portal and getting the entire family through it together, a task made more complicated when Brian and Audrey rescue a neighborhood girl named Jeannette after her parents are killed.

Tragedy strikes hard before the family can escape. During an Allosaurus attack, Greg attempts to fend off the creature with a hammer, only to have it bite off his leg and kill him in front of his horrified family. As a fire closes in around them, the grieving Platts discover another wormhole near a neighbor’s house and make a desperate push to reach it before the timeline resets.

The escape proves chaotic, with the family battling a giant snake and pterosaur attacks inside their home before finally reaching the wormhole, which flickers open and shut at unpredictable intervals. Jeannette makes it through safely, but Brian miscalculates his jump and injures his leg, forcing the family to scramble back through the house before they can all escape together.

Once they emerge on the other side, the family finds themselves just outside Oak Street moments before the original cosmic event occurred. Jeannette decides to return into the timeline in hopes of finding her parents, while Denise rushes to a payphone to place a pizza order, deliberately intercepting Greg before he can be swept away by the very disaster they just survived.

The film then jumps forward two years, revealing that Denise has written a successful book about their ordeal, and the Platts and Jeannette’s family have grown close, with life largely returning to normal. However, a closer examination complicates this seemingly happy ending, as two versions of Jeannette now exist: one from before the timeline was altered and one who survived the dinosaurs.

This logic applies to the rest of the family as well. By saving Greg, Denise effectively left alternate versions of herself, Brian, and Audrey stranded in the original timeline, with no indication they were ever rescued. Given Mitchell’s knack for crafting layered, unsettling narratives as seen in ‘It Follows,’ it’s fitting that this seemingly warm conclusion conceals a darker reality, suggesting the family’s happy ending came at a significant, unacknowledged cost.
