‘The New Simpsons Movie’ Release Date Revealed and Fans Are Excited
After nearly two decades of speculation, ‘The Simpsons’ fans are finally seeing their hopes materialize. What began as a playful chalkboard gag in 2007 has transformed into a real, in-production sequel, and this week, fans received another significant update.
The anticipation has been long-standing. For years, Fox and later Disney faced questions about whether Springfield’s beloved family would return to the big screen, with producers occasionally hinting at the idea without providing concrete details.
That uncertainty came to an end when 20th Century Studios unveiled the sequel’s title at its D23 pavilion this week: ‘The New Simpsons Movie.’ This announcement was made through signage at the studio’s convention booth, giving fans their first official glimpse of the much-anticipated follow-up’s title.
The concept of a sequel has been in discussions since the original film debuted in 2007. The opening chalkboard gag of the show’s first episode post-movie humorously stated, “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie,” a joke that has now turned into a surprisingly accurate prediction following Disney’s confirmation of the sequel.
Conversations about a follow-up gained momentum over the years, with ‘Simpsons’ producer Al Jean confirming talks with Disney as early as 2019. However, these discussions reportedly stalled during the pandemic. It wasn’t until September 2025 that 20th Century Studios officially announced the sequel, accompanied by a poster featuring Homer reaching for a pink-frosted donut and the tagline “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”
That initial announcement set the film’s release for July 23, 2027, nearly twenty years after the original’s July 2007 premiere. This date also had an unexpected impact on Marvel fans, as the sequel took over a release slot previously reserved for an untitled Marvel Studios project.
Since then, the film’s release date has been adjusted. ‘The New Simpsons Movie’ is now scheduled to hit theaters on September 3, shifting from its original summer release to the Labor Day holiday weekend.
20th Century Studios confirmed this change via its official Instagram account, sharing an image of Homer accidentally stabbing his foot with a makeshift flag displaying the new release date, humorously captioned about the film arriving during “Labor D’OH Weekend.” Reactions from fans regarding the delay were mixed, with some expressing mild disappointment over the extended wait while others embraced the humor of the situation.
The original ‘Simpsons Movie’ set a high bar for the sequel, having grossed over $536 million worldwide against a modest $75 million budget in 2007. That film featured Homer inadvertently polluting Springfield’s water supply, leading to the EPA placing a massive dome over the entire town.
Details about the sequel’s plot remain tightly under wraps for now, with the D23 reveal focusing primarily on branding rather than story specifics. Nevertheless, with a confirmed title, a set release date, and ‘The Simpsons’ renewed for a 40th season on television, the franchise’s return to the big screen now feels like a genuine certainty rather than just another round of speculation.
