Christopher Nolan has established himself as a master of box office success, and ‘The Odyssey’ is no exception, continuing this trend beyond North America. This mythological epic, which follows Matt Damon’s Odysseus on his treacherous journey home after the Trojan War, has emerged as one of the year’s most reliable international performers since its release. The film features a star-studded cast including Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, and Zendaya.

The film’s strong performance has been particularly notable in South Korea, a highly competitive market for theatrical releases. ‘The Odyssey’ opened at the top of the Korean box office in early August, surpassing ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and attracting over 1.3 million admissions during its opening weekend.

Instead of experiencing the typical drop-off after a strong debut, the film has continued to gain momentum. On its second Saturday in Korean theaters, ‘The Odyssey’ earned an impressive $5 million, as reported by box office tracker Luiz Fernando, marking the highest second Saturday for any Hollywood film in the country since the pandemic began. This figure exceeded ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s’ second Saturday total of $3.8 million and represented a remarkable 22.8% increase over its first Saturday earnings.

Such week-over-week growth is rare for major releases, which usually see a decline as the initial excitement wanes. With this second Saturday performance, ‘The Odyssey’ has now amassed a cumulative total of $29.6 million in Korea, with 3.8 million total admissions after just 11 days in theaters. It is projected to earn between $16 million and $16.5 million over its second five-day weekend, reflecting an 11% to 14% increase from its opening weekend figures.

This growth pattern indicates strong word-of-mouth rather than mere marketing hype driving the film’s success. Unlike the typical decline seen in most films after their opening weekend, ‘The Odyssey’ has experienced increased single-day grosses, suggesting that early viewers are actively recommending it to others.

This trend has been consistent across various data points throughout the film’s run in Korea. The movie’s Friday earnings also saw an increase in its second week compared to the first, further emphasizing the positive audience reception beyond the initial weekend.

The performance of ‘The Odyssey’ is particularly noteworthy given its competition with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in the Korean market. Despite facing off against one of the year’s biggest superhero films, Nolan’s movie has maintained its number one position while consistently outperforming ‘Spider-Man’s’ week-over-week figures in the same market.

This accomplishment is significant, considering the contrasting positioning of the two films. While ‘Brand New Day’ benefits from established franchise recognition and targets a younger audience, ‘The Odyssey’ has managed to sustain and even grow its momentum based solely on positive reviews and audience recommendations, a rare achievement for an original, R-rated epic competing against well-known superhero franchises.

With ‘The Odyssey’ continuing to break conventional box office trends both domestically and internationally, its performance in Korea adds yet another layer to what is shaping up to be one of Christopher Nolan’s most commercially successful films to date. The film’s overall earnings in Korea place it well ahead of the pace for a market that has historically been challenging for adult-oriented, non-franchise films to thrive.
