Disneyland Paris has been undergoing a significant transformation over the past few years, rebranding the former Walt Disney Studios Park into Disney Adventure World. This includes the introduction of major new areas such as Avengers Campus, Worlds of Pixar, and World of Frozen. The expansion continues to gain momentum, with Disney announcing the next major attraction at this year’s D23 event as part of the park’s ongoing overhaul.

The new attraction, dedicated to ‘The Lion King,’ was first hinted at during D23 2024. Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro confirmed that a new area themed around Simba’s journey would eventually be part of the park. Initial concept art revealed a log flume ride similar to the formats used for Splash Mountain and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, although many details remained unconfirmed for months as the project progressed through its early development stages.

At this weekend’s D23 panel, Disney filled in those gaps. The flume ride will provide a comprehensive retelling of Simba’s journey from cub to king, featuring scenes and music directly from the original film. Notably, Scar will make his debut as a brand-new audio-animatronics figure for the attraction’s climactic showdown with Simba.

According to the concept art presented during the panel, this confrontation scene will be one of the ride’s most dramatic highlights, providing guests with a front-row view of the story’s pivotal moment. The flume features a 52-foot drop, while the ride building that houses Pride Rock stands 120 feet tall, making it one of the tallest structures in any Disney park.

Disney has confirmed that the attraction will not be a standalone ride but will instead anchor a larger immersive area dedicated entirely to ‘The Lion King’ universe. This expanded land will feature themed dining, shopping, and character meet-and-greets, allowing guests multiple ways to engage with the story beyond the flume ride once the area is fully completed.

Construction is already underway, with Imagineers collaborating with teams from Disneyland Paris and Disney Animation Studios to bring this world to life. A representative from Walt Disney Imagineering stated that the project reflects a story that has captivated audiences for over 30 years, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among various teams to honor the film’s legacy.

In contrast to Disney’s warm-weather flume rides in California and Florida, the Lion King attraction has been specifically designed to withstand Disneyland Paris’s colder winters. Only one of the ride’s drops occurs outdoors, a strategic design choice aimed at keeping most of the experience sheltered from the elements year-round, ensuring the ride remains operational throughout all seasons.

Early development materials have also revealed maquettes, small-scale sculptures typically used in designing full-size animatronics, for characters such as Simba, Nala, Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, and the hyenas. This suggests that the ride will feature a diverse cast of animatronic figures beyond just Scar.

With construction progressing and new details confirmed, Disney’s ‘Lion King’ attraction is poised to become one of the signature experiences at Disney Adventure World upon its opening, joining a growing lineup of story-driven rides that are transforming the resort.
