‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ Confirms Its First Disney World The Land of the Dead
Square Enix has kept ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ largely under wraps since its announcement in 2022, providing fans with only brief glimpses of Sora’s new setting, Quadratum. This year’s D23 presentation felt particularly significant, as fans have long awaited substantial updates about the sequel, especially regarding which Disney worlds might make an appearance.
That anticipation was rewarded during Disney’s D23 Entertainment Showcase, where a new trailer for ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ unveiled its first confirmed Disney world. Sora will venture into the Land of the Dead from Pixar’s ‘Coco,’ embarking on a Día de los Muertos-themed adventure alongside Miguel and his great-great-grandfather Hector.
The approximately 90-second trailer begins by recreating a crucial scene from the film, featuring Hector explaining the Final Death to Miguel. The action quickly shifts to a Heartless attack during one of Miguel’s performances. Sora, now sporting a Día de Muertos-inspired look with skull-style face paint, a heart and crown design on his cheeks, and a marigold-and-bone Keyblade, joins the fray and teams up with Miguel and Hector.
Square Enix revealed that the Coco world will introduce new gameplay features, including action-packed sequences allowing players to control Donald and Goofy directly. Additionally, there will be an exploration segment featuring King Mickey as he searches for clues about Sora’s whereabouts. The trailer hinted at darker story elements, showing Sora collapsing after experiencing ghostly visions of Donald and Goofy, suggesting a deeper connection between his journey through Quadratum and the Coco world.
Alongside the new footage, Square Enix announced that ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ is targeting a “late 2027” release window. The game will be available on launch day across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store, marking a broader platform rollout than usual for the series.
This platform expansion signifies a notable shift for a franchise that has traditionally alternated between PlayStation exclusivity and Nintendo handheld spin-offs. Fans can now wishlist the game across all storefronts, providing an early way to track its release ahead of next year’s launch.
The reveal of the Coco world was not the only significant announcement from the weekend. Disney also confirmed a new Kingdom Hearts anime series in development for Disney+, which will reportedly reimagine the franchise’s saga with a fresh story rather than directly adapting the games. This has sparked early speculation among fans about which characters might lead its narrative.
With the confirmation of the Coco world, emerging gameplay details, and an anime adaptation in the works, ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ seems to be entering a more active phase of its rollout after years of relative silence. Given the impressive visual design of the Land of the Dead and the expanding scope of the franchise, fans have plenty of reasons to stay tuned for more updates as 2027 approaches.
