‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Surpasses ‘Avatar’ in All-Time Domestic Box Office
Tom Holland’s fourth solo adventure as Spider-Man has dominated the box office for three consecutive weekends. Its third weekend in theaters brought another remarkable milestone that seemed improbable for a franchise sequel this far into its run. Instead of following the typical post-opening decline, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has continued to ascend the all-time charts at a pace that has left box office analysts scrambling, reshaping expectations for what a fourth installment can achieve.
The film’s momentum continued into its third weekend, where it grossed $70 million domestically, according to updated figures from Sony. This marks the second-best third weekend in domestic box office history, only behind ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’ The drop from the previous weekend was 51.5%, a steeper decline than ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ 57.1% or ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ 44.5% third-weekend drops, though the actual dollar figures still surpassed both films significantly.
This impressive third-weekend performance pushed ‘Brand New Day’s’ domestic total to $785.8 million after just 15 days in theaters, officially surpassing ‘Avatar’s’ $785.2 million and making it the fourth highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. The film now sits approximately $62 million ahead of where ‘Avengers: Endgame’ was at the same point in its historic run, despite having opened just $3 million ahead of Endgame’s early pace.
With ‘No Way Home’s’ $814.8 million domestic total now just $32 million away, industry trackers anticipate ‘Brand New Day’ will cross the $800 million mark by Tuesday, positioning it to surpass its franchise predecessor within days. Some projections suggest the film’s eventual domestic total could range between $910 million and $960 million, making it only the second film in history to exceed the $900 million mark and putting it within reach of ‘The Force Awakens’s’ eleven-year-old domestic record of $936.6 million.
The film’s global performance has mirrored its domestic success. ‘Brand New Day’ crossed $2 billion worldwide in just 17 days, according to Cosmic Book News, becoming the eighth film in history to reach that milestone and the second-fastest ever, following ‘Endgame’s’ 11-day run. It has also surpassed ‘No Way Home’s’ $1.92 billion total, making it the highest-grossing ‘Spider-Man’ film ever.
This international run has already set a record for Sony, with box office analysts now projecting that the film could ultimately approach $2.5 billion globally. This total would place it alongside only ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ among films to achieve that before any inflation adjustments or theatrical re-releases.

With minimal major competition on the release calendar in the coming weeks, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ remains the top film in theaters for a third consecutive weekend, a feat only matched this year by the billion-dollar animated hit ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.’ Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige expressed that he never anticipated ‘Endgame’s’ domestic opening record to be broken, but he couldn’t be happier that it happened with the studio’s 38th MCU release.
As the film approaches both ‘No Way Home’ and eventually ‘The Force Awakens’ itself, ‘Brand New Day’ is increasingly likely to conclude its theatrical run as one of the defining box office stories of the decade. With no significant competition on the horizon before the fall, this record-setting ascent shows little sign of slowing down anytime soon.
